Death Penalty's Costs, Conservatives Concerned, Racial Bias, Equal Justice USA, Death Penalty Focus!

The United States shares the distinction of government-sponsored killing with infamous dictatorships – North Korea, Iran, Iraq, Libya, China, Saudi Arabia, Somalia. Other nations including Egypt, Sudan, Yemen, Belarus, and Afghanistan continue the practice of execution.

On November 17, 2020, for the eighth time, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution calling for a global Moratorium on Executions. “The death penalty has no place in the 21st century.” Read more here.

Here is the most recent map of global engagement in capital punishment.

Equal Justice USA

Imagine a justice system that heals instead of kills. A system that repairs and prevents trauma — not one that causes it.

The death penalty, police violence, mass incarceration — these have no place in that vision.

Supporters of the death penalty say it is “for the victims.” But you and I know better. Executions don’t offer healing, and many survivors say it compounds their trauma and makes things worse.

Together, we can realize our vision of a country whose justice brings us repair, not punishment and cruelty. Please join us once again in this fight and renew your gift to EJUSA today. Help out Now

Send thanks to the EJUSA.

Over the past decade you’ve helped us make tremendous progress as state after state repeals the death penalty. Last year, New Hampshire. This year, Colorado. We can’t let up now. Repeal in Wyoming and Ohio may be next.

Let us not just imagine our nation without the death penalty. Let’s make it happen. Act now to stop this extreme instrument of violence and racism.

Racial Bias in Government

Growing up in a conservative household, I always knew the government was fallible, ineffective and sometimes even corrupt. So it should surprise no one, least of all conservatives well aware of government’s failures, that our public systems are overrun with racial bias too.

The parallels between lynchings and our modern death penalty system are striking. Innocent men were typically lynched for alleged crimes against white people with little evidence, no due process, and without a jury of their peers. Today, those sentenced to death are often tried in courtrooms where they are the only person of color, evidence is circumstantial, and their lawyer is ineffective.

Furthermore, we apply the death penalty predominately in cases with white victims, while victims of color often do not get the same resources or attention devoted to their cases.

Please join the Conservatives Concerned so that we can end this egregiously racially biased government program.

Your help will help rally Conservatives at the state and national level to stop executions, repeal death penalty laws, and educate the public about a system that makes mistakes, fails to keep us safe, and wastes millions of dollars.

Evidence of racial discrimination in the death penalty system is overwhelming. Consider that Black defendants make up 42 percent of those on death row while comprising only 13 percent of our current population. As conservatives we must work on the frontlines of fighting racial bias at the hands of the government. This work perfectly aligns with our values and belief system. Our movement was formed with the goal of ending slavery, and we succeeded!. Let’s embrace that legacy and build on it.

The Death Penalty's Costs Are Making Us Less Safe

There are endless problems with the death penalty. Americans are wrongfully convicted frequently, it fails to deter crime, and it’s overrun with socioeconomic and racial bias. And don’t believe the falsehood tha t capital punishment saves taxpayer dollars. Far from it.

In reality, we spend up to 10 times more for the death penalty than we do on the next most expensive sentence, which is life in prison without parole. And many of those costs are stacked up front because the trial itself is so much more expensive.

Please join the Conservatives Concerned so that we can end this morally corrupt AND wasteful policy.

This year your gift will go further than ever before. If you’re giving to Conservatives Concerned for the first time, a generous supporter will match your gift dollar for dollar. Not a first time donor? The same foundation will match the portion of your gifts over and above your previous donation. Your gift will help rally Conservatives at the state and national level to stop executions, repeal death penalty laws, and educate the public about a system that makes mistakes, fails to keep us safe, and wastes millions of dollars

Cost is clearly not the main reason to oppose the death penalty. But as Conservatives we should care about the government squandering our resources, especially when those same tax dollars could be used for things that actually do improve public safety.

Death penalty supporters will often say the death penalty is expensive because it takes too long to carry it out. Wrong again. Time on death row does not explain away the costs. That’s because 70% of the death penalty’s costs come from the trial alone. In reality, the only death penalty policy that will save taxpayer dollars is to end it.

Together, we can debunk the myth of the death penalty as a tax dollar-saving policy.

Conservatives Concerned About the Death Penalty is the only national network of political and social conservatives devoted to questioning the alignment of capital punishment with conservative principles and values.
