College of Optometry Ceasing Cruel Experiments on Cats

We reached a settlement agreement in our lawsuit against the State University of New York (SUNY) over animal care records relating to painful and invasive experiments on the brains of kittens and young cats. As part of the settlement, SUNY has committed to producing documents that prove its College of Optometry has ceased its experimentation on cats.

On November 18, the Humane Cosmetics Act of 2019 was introduced to both chambers of Congress. With a greater emphasis on the development and use of alternatives, this new version of the Humane Cosmetics Act provides a more comprehensive approach to end the use of animals to test cosmetic products than previous versions.

Important points in the bill:

  • Applies to all vertebrate animals, including mice, rats, and fish, who are not covered by the Animal Welfare Act, and are the most used animals in safety testing.Includes criteria for ‘cruelty-free’ labeling.

  • FDA is directed to create a strategic plan to promote the development and use of alternatives and strategies to replace animal tests with alternatives.

  • Requires opportunity for public comment on the FDA plan and exemptions for animal testing.

  • Supported by industry group, the Personal Care Products Council.

As the Chair of the Coalition for Consumer Information on Cosmetics, AAVS manages the Leaping Bunny Program and helps companies acquire cruelty-free certification, so we know that non-animal methods are already being used to establish safety of cosmetic and personal care products. The Humane Cosmetics Act of 2019 presents the most decisive way forward for meaningful progress to end animal testing.

This Company Says They Have to Test on Animals to Sell Their Products in China. But That's Not Necessarily True. Sign Now to Demand an End to Animal Testing.

China is the world's second-largest economy. The country knows it is the crown jewel for many businesses since breaking into the Chinese market can mean millions — or even billions — of dollars of revenue. The country has used their market size to coerce companies into doing things they wouldn't normally do for permission to enter their market. From sharing company secrets to giving the government backdoors to their users' accounts, companies have been willing to make concessions for a slice of the enormous pie.

One company which did just that was NARS. Until 2017, the legendary French makeup and skincare brand had been committed to creating cruelty-free makeup. But when it had the chance to hope over the Great Wall, its executives decided that their morals took a backseat to the company's bottom line.

When it announced via Instagram, many customers expressed disbelief and anger. After all, this was a company that believed: "The global elimination of animal testing needs to happen" and that "product and ingredient safety can be proven by non-animal methods."

But now it seems that NARS no longer has an excuse to continue testing on animals for the Chinese market. Bulldog, a London-based men's skincare line that prides itself on being cruelty-free, is set to be the first international skincare brand to keep their cruelty-free status while breaking into the Chinese market.

Bulldog Skincare will be audited by an international organization that monitors companies for their animal testing practices and will lose their cruelty-free status is they ever test on animals during their production process to meet Chinese standards. However, both the international organization and Bulldog said they have found a way to sell in China without hurting animals.

Bulldog should show formerly cruelty-free companies like NARS that it is possible to sell in China and maintain your values.
