Stop China from Abusing Wild Animals for COVID-19 "Treatment"

China's National Health Commission recently released a list of recommended coronavirus treatments. Despite temporarily banning the trade and consumption of wild animals just days before, this list inexplicably recommends an injection containing bear bile and goat horn as a treatment for COVID-19.

Meet Neko, a Dog Meat Survivor

Last year you helped us rescue 28 innocent victims from cramped cages on route to Bok Nal, South Korea's annual dog meat slaughter-fest. Three dogs sadly succumbed to their severe abuse, but Neko is one of the lucky survivors who made it. Watch our touching video to see how Neko's life has been changed forever in her new home and how in turn, she has changed her guardian's life as well!

In the wake of the coronavirus outbreak, fewer people are traveling, which means dog meat survivors with homes waiting for them are stuck.

It’s become a rescue traffic jam, while costs to care for rescued dogs continue to mount — it costs $150 every month to cover care for an individual dog. Many dogs with adopters are waiting for a flight volunteer. More still are waiting to be adopted.

In a tremendous stride toward protecting animals and human health, China’s Ministry of Agriculture has officially proposed guidelines to reclassify dogs as pets, rather than livestock.

“As far as dogs are concerned, along with the progress of human civilization and the public concern and love for animal protection, dogs have been ‘specialized’ to become companion animals, and internationally are not considered to be livestock, and they will not be regulated as livestock in China,” the Ministry of Agriculture said in a notice.

The landmark decision comes amid the global coronavirus outbreak, which stemmed from the transmission of the COVID-19 virus from animals to humans at a wildlife market in Wuhan. These markets also often sell live dogs and cats to be killed and butchered on-site.

The upgraded status of dogs reflects changing views about dog and cat consumption in China, where dog meat is considered a delicacy in many regions but is becoming less common.

While the new designation does not explicitly ban the dog meat trade, it may pave the way for future legislation by serving as a basis for more protective laws. It’s also the latest in a series of promising moves taken throughout China to protect public health and animal welfare, including a ban on wildlife consumption.

China is taking a step in the right direction by recognizing dogs as pets, but more must be done to end the cruel dog and cat meat trade throughout the country, where more than 10 million canines and 4 million cats are slaughtered and consumed annually. Shenzhen recently became the first Chinese city to ban dog and cat meat, and now we must urge the national government to follow suit.

Join the fight against dog and cat meat by signing Lady Freethinker’s ongoing petition calling on Cui Tiankai, the Chinese Ambassador to the U.S., to push for a nationwide ban on this barbaric trade.

NY State Health Commissioner Howard A. Zucker, M.D., J.D.; NYC Department of Health Commissioner Dr. Oxiris Barbot; and NY Governor Andrew Cuomo

New York state should lead the world by example. How? By immediately closing down and permanently banning all cruel and dangerous live animal “wet” markets.

New York is the epicenter for the global COVID-19 pandemic, and just like the wet markets in China that gave birth to the crisis, more than 80 dangerous live animal markets are operating today in New York City alone, despite the New York State of Pause Executive Order.

PETA Asia Goes Inside ‘Wet Markets’, Where Diseases Like COVID-19 Originate

Soaked wet with blood, guts, feces, and other bodily fluids and parts, these markets are ideal environments for the incubation and spreading of zoonotic diseases, as a mix of animals are jam-packed into tight cages awaiting slaughter.

NYC is particularly susceptible to a new, even more uncontainable virus spreading through its population of over 8 million people, as all residents live in relatively close quarters. As live animal wet markets remain open, public health and safety are at risk. In addition to the current uncontained COVID virus, new variants of COVID could emerge, reinfecting humans and causing a global viral pandemic relapse. Such introductions could be more deadly, and plague even more people globally.

The facts are clear: live animal markets — whether in Wuhan, China or on the streets of New York — are breeding grounds for deadly zoonotic diseases that then become communicable human-to-human viruses. The government must immediately shut them all down in the interest of public health and safety.

Sign this petition urging lawmakers to do everything in their power to shut down all live animal markets in the state of New York. CLICK HERE TO READ THE FULL PETITION TEXT

In early April – months after the COVID-19 outbreak began – PETA Asia investigators went inside "wet markets" (also called "live-animal markets") in Indonesia and Thailand that are still operating. Take Action

Despite experts' belief that the novel coronavirus originated in such a market in China – and although traders have been warned by officials to stop selling dogs, cats, bats, rats, and other animals – both animal flesh and live, terrified animals are still being openly sold in markets in Asia and all over the world.

Please, join PETA in urging the World Health Organization to call for an end to deadly "wet markets" around the globe: Take Action

The Annual Ritual of Dog Slaughter in Togo Must End. Sign to Ask the Government to Ban it...Sign Now

Each July, thousands of teenage boys in Togo, Africa, spend a full two weeks gorging on dog meat as part of a 'traditional initiation.' The first week, the teens go into hiding and the second is spent participating in a wrestling competition known as Evala.

In order to become a member of society, each young man must perform the ritual annually for three years. As the Evala wrestling practice spreads across more locations, so does the brutal mass slaughtering of dogs for dog meat, which is seen as the wrestler's secret weapon for success.

Each competitor desires the attributes which dogs possess: loyalty, courage, intelligence, endurance, cunning, faithfulness and so on. It is falsely believed eating dog meat will transfer the dog's attributes to the consumer, giving him supernatural powers over his opponent.

The number of dogs slaughtered for the Evala festival each year is unknown. We do know thousands of young men from numerous different tribes compete against each other, so the number of dogs killed would be staggering.

A group known as Fight Dog Meat is calling for the Evala festival to ban the slaughter of dogs and consumption of dog meat.

It also suggests that Togo officials embrace this window of opportunity to become a professional event, guaranteeing the survival of the wrestling performance of athleticism.

Did You Know? All About Pigeons!

Chances are you’ve seen pigeons in your neighborhood—but did you know that these birds can fly up to 50 miles per hour or that a baby pigeon is called a "squeaker"? Written and composed by Tony Award winners Lisa Lambert and Greg Morrison, the video set to a playful tune uses adorable animation and age-appropriate language to reveal interesting facts about these marvelous birds.

These Animals Need Your Help During the Pandemic!

There’s no working from home for the “miracle workers” on PETA’s field team. While staying at least 6 feet away from animals’ human guardians, wearing masks and gloves, our fieldworkers are still heading out—as they do all 365 days of the year—to low-income communities, where they get up close and personal with dogs whose whole lonely lives are spent chained in the far reaches of a backyard. Help them by donating an unopened bag of dog or cat food! https://www.peta.org/blog/covid-19-pe...

Animals are struggling to survive outside of workplaces that are now empty due to COVID-19.

Community cats make their homes around businesses, and birds migrate through these areas or nest nearby. Squirrels and other wild animals like raccoons and opossums can be very reliant on human food waste as a means to eat.

To compound the problem, it is also springtime, which means mating season for mammals and birds. Millions of birds are migrating and may return to areas with little to no food. So, in addition to struggling to feed themselves, many birds and mammals are also struggling to feed their offspring.

What can you do to help these animals during this difficult period?

Was a coworker feeding cats or birds at your workplace? If so, check in with the coworker to see if they are continuing to do so. If they aren't, consider taking over daily feeding and providing fresh water until this passes and life returns to normal.

The stay-at-home orders in most states allow someone to care for animals in need. Please check your local or state stay-at-home order to confirm this is still the case.

If you need help buying or securing donations of birdseed or cat food, check with your local animal rescues, food banks, and churches to see what resources are available. You can also ask friends or family who may be less affected by the shutdown to help purchase food and supplies.

To learn what you can do to help wild animals affected by the shutdown, check in with local wildlife rehabbers or rescues. You can find a list of wildlife resources by doing an Internet search using your city name and "wildlife rehabbers."

These are trying times for everyone, animals included. Please watch out for one another as well as for other animals in need.

What Does the Bible Say About Animals?

PETA LAMBS (or “least among my brothers and sisters,” from Matthew 25:40) is a resource for Christians who want to learn more about how our faith should influence our relationship with animals. PETA LAMBS come from all walks of life.

We are united first by our faith in Christ and second by our common desire to be better stewards of God's creation.

We're asking all Christians to behave like Christians toward other creatures.

After all, shouldn't the Christian community be leading the charge toward more compassionate, sustainable choices for a world "on earth as it is in heaven"?

If you follow Jesus, don't support cruelty to animals, and want to take care of God's Earth, you're one of the PETA LAMBS. https://www.petalambs.com/

Life for endangered species in Arizona just got a whole lot harder, thanks to a bill that will allow private property owners to hide any and all information about threatened wildlife living on their land in the name of a cooprivate property rights.

Without this information, conservationists can't protect those species and greedy developers will surely destroy the habitats of endangered flora and fauna!

Arizona alone is home to 65 species that are listed under the United States' Endangered Species Act (ESA). The state has a responsibility to support and conserve their populations, or they could be lost forever.

That is why it is so abhorrent that Arizona's legislators would pass a bill like HB 2749 that would give a leg up to big developers while crushing what's left of already vulnerable populations of wildlife.

This is a ridiculous, thinly veiled attempt to give yet another pass to big developers, no matter the cost.

But we believe the cost of losing Arizona's endangered species forever is too high.

In a welcome animal rights victory, landmark legislation prohibiting the third-party sale of puppies and kittens for profit has become law in England, the UK government announced.

Lucy’s Law — named after a cavalier King Charles spaniel who was born in a Welsh puppy farm in 2008 and callously bred to produce multiple puppy litters — is designed to stop illegal puppy farming and ban third-party dealers, making all dog and cat breeders accountable for the welfare of the animals in their care.

People who want to add a puppy or kitten to their family will now have to acquire one directly from a licensed breeder or adopt from a rescue center. Traders who sell these animals without a licence can face up to six months in prison, or an unlimited fine.

The new legislation came into effect following a long campaign headed by veterinarian and animal welfare advocate Marc Abraham, which was supported by high-profile figures such as Brian May, Ricky Gervais and Peter Egan.

“I’m incredibly proud to have led the 10-year campaign to ban cruel puppy and kitten dealers and to get this essential Lucy’s Law legislation over the line,” said Abraham, who is also the founder of Pup Aid. “I’d like to give a huge thanks to the UK Government for passing this law, as well as every animal-loving parliamentarian, celebrity, welfare organization, and member of the public that supported us.”

“Lucy was an incredibly brave dog,” he continued, “and it’s right that her memory is honoured with such an important piece of legislation to help end puppy farm cruelty; protecting breeding dogs just like her, as well as cats, their young, and also unsuspecting animal-lovers from the dangers of irresponsible breeding and cruel puppy and kitten dealers.”

Welcome to the Animal & Wildlife Welfare, Abuse & Crime Report brought to you by the Sustainable Action Network (SAN)!

With the government now banning wildlife consumption, it's time to end China's cruel and dangerous wildlife trade completely, to spare animals from torture and slash the risk of human disease. Outlawing wild animals for food was an important step, but enforcement is crucial -- and as long as wild animal slaughter for medicine is still legal, the cruelty will go on. Help stop the cruelty. Sign the petition to urge China to end the wild animal trade for good. Shockingly, the Chinese government recently recommended using bear bile as a treatment for coronavirus, and a recent report from Daily Mail suggests China's deadly live animal markets are still selling dogs, cats, bats, rabbits, ducks and more. Following these reckless and unsanitary markets to continue is a serious threat to both global human health and animal welfare. People deserve better. Animals deserve better. The world deserves better. Sign the petition

A new docuseries, “Tiger King,” featuring several roadside zoo owners, has captivated the nation. But behind the drama and big personalities are animals facing a lifetime of captivity, abuse and neglect. Though it offers the viewer a glimpse into roadside zoo life, “Tiger King” largely glosses over the rampant animal cruelty that is inherent in cub encounter operations and roadside zoos.

Over the years, the Humane Society of the United States has conducted several undercover investigations of roadside zoos, including an investigation into G.W. Exotic Animal Park, owned by the show’s protagonist, Joseph Maldonado-Passage (aka Joe Exotic).

These investigations found tigers “trained” through physical abuse, cubs forcibly handled despite cries of despair and sick animals denied proper veterinary care.

No one should keep wild cats as pets or patronize roadside zoos. Let's tell Congress to pass the Big Cat Public Safety Act and leave the abject cruelty on full display in “Tiger King” on the cutting room floor.

From illicit drug use to murder-for-hire allegations, Netflix’s newest hit docuseries Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem and Madness takes viewers on a rollercoaster ride through the twisted world of the big cat industry.

Despite the wildly entertaining storyline, Tiger King unfortunately fails to offer anything more than a brief glimpse into the intense suffering endured by the big cat industry’s main victims — the animals.

While the show does reveal moments of animal cruelty — a particularly shocking moment is when Joe Exotic, the owner of an exotic animal park, uses a metal pole to pull a newborn tiger cub from her mother moments after birth — Tiger King refuses to marinate on the issue for longer than a few minutes, using the animals more as pawns to move the plot forward than the targets of an abusive multi-million dollar business.

One of the show’s primary subjects, Carole Baskins, frequently mentions the Big Cat Public Safety Act (BCPSA), but as a less-than-idolized character who is repeatedly accused of killing her husband, the bill tends to get overlooked. Here’s why the BCPSA actually matters:

CAPTIVE TIGERS OUTNUMBER TIGERS IN THE WILD.

Tiger King focuses on two or three roadside zoos, but the problem is much bigger than that. The number of captive tigers in the United States outnumber the amount of tigers in the wild, according to National Geographic.

Joe Exotic, Bhagavan “Doc” Antle, and Jeff Lowe’s outlandish behaviors might be unique, but their possession of big cats is not. In the United States, over 90 percent of captive tigers live in privately-owned locations – from roadside zoos and private breeding facilities to truck stops and urban apartment buildings. Specifically, 6 percent of tigers live in facilities accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. This poses a threat to the safety and wellbeing of both the animals living in inadequate conditions and the people interacting with them.

IN SOME JURISDICTIONS, IT IS EASIER TO OWN A TIGER THAN ADOPT A DOG.

How is it possible that so many people – including those living in apartments – are able to have tigers as pets? With no federal law, the rules and regulations are decided by each state; and currently, only 20 states have comprehensive bans on owning wildlife. Of the remaining states, 13 have partial exotic wildlife bans, 14 permit private ownership of exotic wildlife with a license or permit, and 4 don’t even require a license or permit to own exotic animals.

In some jurisdictions, it is easier to own a tiger than adopt a dog, according to the World Wildlife Foundation. The Captive Wildlife Safety Act, which currently prohibits interstate and foreign big cat trade, is clearly not enough. Without stronger federal regulations, the big cat industry will continue to thrive.

TIGERS ARE A PUBLIC HEALTH CONCERN AND FREQUENTLY TORTURED OR KILLED FOR PROFIT.

So, why should the big cat industry be shut down anyway? Tiger King hints at the answer – public health and animal welfare.

Privately possessing tigers and other big cats endangers the lives of the people around them. From 1990 to 2012, over 300 dangerous incidents involving big cats happened in the United States across 44 states, according to the Humane Society. In those incidents, 4 children and 16 adults died. Dozens more lost their limbs or suffered irreparable traumatic injuries.

Captive tigers are frequently the victims of animal welfare violations as well. The big cat industry mainly profits off of cubs, meaning adult tigers and other big cats are shipped off to inhumane roadside zoos or killed because the costs of caring for them are too high.

“… the U.S. Agriculture Department says only cubs between the ages of 4 weeks (no longer “neonatal”) and 12 weeks (when they become “too big, too fast, and too strong”) should be used [for petting and photographs],” the Washington Post reported. “That creates an incentive, critics say, for breeders such as [Joe Exotic] to pump out cubs – and a constant supply of 100-day-old tigers that have outgrown their value.”

SUPPORT THE BIG CAT PUBLIC SAFETY ACT TO END BIG CAT CAPTIVITY IN THE UNITED STATES.

If Tiger King guarantees one thing, it’s that current laws are inadequate. The Endangered Species Act bans the sale and possession of all species of endangered wildlife, but the rules for captive-bred wildlife are murky and not well-regulated. It is relatively easy to buy, sell, breed and exploit big cats without attracting the attention of law enforcement officers. And the Captive Wildlife Safety Act contains loopholes for roadside zoos like Greater Wynnewood Exotic Animal Park.

The BCPSA would amend the Captive Wildlife Safety Act to fully ban all private possession of big cats in the United States. A Lady Freethinker petition urging House and Senate leaders to pass the Big Cat Public Safety Act has already garnered over 26,000 signatures. Thank you to those who have already signed. To those who haven’t, please sign and help save tigers, lions and other big cats from a miserable life in captivity.

Bear Bile is Being Recommended to Treat Covid-19, with NO EVIDENCE!

Bears are being slaughtered to make this COVID-19 treatment — but there's no evidence that it works! Sign Now

The spread of the novel coronavirus and the disease it causes in humans, COVID-19, has medical professionals across the globe working tirelessly to uncover possible treatments and develop a vaccine. Unfortunately, it is so early in the pandemic that we are just now starting to understand the virus well enough to even start clinical trials on treatment. Randomized clinical trials are the gold standard for making evidence-based recommendations on treatment options of disease.

That's why it's so dismaying to learn that the Chinese government is now recommending a substance containing bear bile to treat Covid-19.

The substance is called "Tan Re Qing" and the casualties from its use will not be human. They will be the vulnerable population of Asiatic Black Bears that are most commonly farmed for their bile. Some bear bile is procured from bears that are locked up, living horrible and unnatural lives, only to have their bile pulled out as often as possible for medicinal purposes. Reports show that bears on bile farms are often starved, suffering from diseases, and living in isolation. Other bear bile is procured in even more tragic ways — by killing wild bears just for their bile.

Wet markets are awful: They sell live and dead animals—often of a wide variety of species—for human consumption. They're called "wet" because water splashes over the sides of open tubs containing live sea animals who will inevitably be killed—and because countertops and floors are streaked red with the blood of gutted chickens and other slaughtered animals.

A Chinese wet market is believed to have been where the novel coronavirus originated, and wet markets exist throughout Asia. This week, PETA wrote to government officials in Cambodia, Hong Kong SAR, Indonesia, Laos, Mainland China, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam calling for the immediate and permanent closure of deadly wet markets. Closing off these sources of infectious diseases is an absolute necessity, as doing so would help prevent future deadly outbreaks.

Please sign PETA's action alert to the WHO urging it to call on governments everywhere to close cruel and deadly live-animal markets permanently.

Thousands of Dogs Will Die During the Yulin Dog Meat Festival. Ask NARS to Condemn the Festival Now.

Until 2017, NARS — the legendary French makeup and skincare brand — had been committed to creating cruelty-free makeup. But when they decided to enter the Chinese market, their morals took a back seat to their bottom line.

Chinese law requires brands to test their products on animals in order to sell them. So NARS decided to abruptly abandon its cruelty-free commitment.

NARS's decision was disappointing, but its entrance into the Chinese market means it has a large and prominent platform that can reach hundreds of millions of people.

The annual event is responsible for the brutal torture and killing of thousands of dogs each year.

Dog meat consumers believe that the meat tastes better when dogs have more adrenaline in their blood, so dog butchers will often torture the animals to death in order to increase their adrenaline flow. Dogs are beaten, burned alive with blowtorches, and tossed into boiling pots of water.

As the world faces the threat of the COVID-19 pandemic in unprecedented ways, we are learning quickly that infectious diseases pose a significant threat to our global population. Whether it’s COVID-19, SARS, or other recent public health disasters, outbreaks are having a profound effect on global health and the worldwide economy, and the day-to-day lives of billions of people.

What we’ve learned about COVID-19 and what we already knew about SARS is that these outbreaks can be linked to wet markets and illegal slaughterhouses. These markets, a popular source of produce, meat and live animals, are not only prevalent in Chinese cities, but cities across the region and indeed the world.

And they’re so unregulated, many worry that they are going to be regular breeding grounds for viruses and diseases that kill millions around the world.

That’s why we need solutions now.

What we’re all experiencing today with COVID-19 could have been stopped if these wet markets and illegal slaughterhouses had been shut down, or at least significantly regulated.

We need global leadership and intervention which is why we’re asking you to stand with us and call on the United Nations and World Health Organization to address the dangerous effects of these animal markets and slaughterhouses.

Scientists tell us that keeping different animals in close, prolonged proximity with one another and with people creates an unhealthy environment, and that this is the probable source of the mutation that enabled COVID-19 to infect humans.

Viruses long present in some animals show an ability to mutate from nonhuman to nonhuman host, and ultimately gain an ability to bind to human cell receptors.

When that happens, we see tragedy on the scale of what we saw with SARS, and what we’re seeing right now as millions of people get infected, and hundreds of thousands or more die from COVID-19.

The Vanderpump Dog Foundation has been warning about this for years, as we’ve seen first-hand the brutality and horrific practices that happen in many of these wet markets and slaughterhouses.

In our documentary, “The Road to Yulin … and Beyond,”we uncovered graphic torture of dogs in slaughterhouses, as well as the dangers that come from digesting or coming into contact with meat of unknown origins.

These risks include rabies exposure to slaughterhouse workers, antibiotic resistance, parasites, and bacterial infections when people eat dog meat.

An estimated 60% of all known human infectious diseases and 75% of emerging pathogens originate in animals, according to the World Health Organization.

We cannot wait any longer to address this.

Pressure is already mounting on world authorities to address this. Chinese President Xi Jinping recently announced a study on the prevention and control of the coronavirus including the need to strengthen market supervision, resolutely ban and severely crack down on illegal wildlife markets and trade. Other cities like Shenzen in China, home to 30 million people, passed a law banning the consumption of dog and cat meat that goes into effect in May 2020.

These are helping, but we need more.To avoid future pandemics, we need a global effort to shut down and/or significantly regulate these wet markets not only in China, but across the world. Any lack of action with regards to addressing the source of the COVID-19 pandemic will present a danger for our future, and the threat that similar diseases will not only re-occur but expand.

Coronavirus (and lockdowns) put street dogs in mortal danger!

The corona crisis has placed street dogs in frightening danger all around the world. Most countries are in some form of lockdown, and street dogs are in deep trouble – they depend on volunteers and animal lovers to feed them. Many depend on you and NFA.

Not enough food is getting to street dogs – even those “safe” in sanctuaries!

Sanctuaries that we help around the world that care for street dogs are struggling because staff and volunteers, and even vets, are in lockdown, and food and medicine is becoming increasingly difficult – in some cases impossible – to source.

Street dogs desperately need your help in this worldwide crisis. Most street dogs get food from people who feed them at their offices or factories, and those places are now closed. Some street dogs survive by foraging on discarded human food – all that food has gone. Street dogs are hungry now, they are going to be starving soon.

To make the situation worse, our teams are struggling with government regulations that, in many cases, prevent movement. Dogs are getting sick, and getting permission to help them is fraught with problems.

We are receiving URGENT pleas for EMERGENCY help from all over the world.

People tell us of starving street dogs who are getting no help. Our teams also report an increase in animal cruelty. Vets have reported a surge in injuries caused by beating or kicking. It seems that in some places, people in lockdown are taking their frustration out on animals. Street poisonings are also up.

In times like these, animal lovers must stand together. Street dogs have a tough life in the best of times – now their lives are sheer misery. You can help by donating right now so we can send emergency aid, and stockpile food and certain medicines – already, many borders are closed, and for street dogs in countries like Serbia, Montenegro and Croatia where dog food supplies may come from neighboring countries, this is a complete disaster.

Anything you can donate, any amount large or small, will enable us – at this critical time – to maximize our support for street dogs and the sanctuaries we work with to help them.

Please find it in your heart to help street dogs who may die, without you and people like you.

The Covid-19 coronavirus pandemic is gripping the world right now. And during this time, I want to assure you that even while we respond to this challenge by doing our part to keep our staff and communities safe, our work to protect animals – who continue to be abused and neglected every day – goes on. I know you’ll agree that we cannot let them down, and I’m asking for your help…

We’re kicking off our Anti-Cruelty Campaign this month, to help make sure that animals are not forgotten during this crisis. And you can do a world of good for a defenseless animal by taking one action now:

When you sign this pledge, you are committing to a simple, lifesaving act for animals:

Without you, animals have no voice — and many would have no hope for safety, love, or justice. Let me give you just one example of an abused animal who needs your voice.

Riley, a four-month-old Labrador puppy, was abandoned in a California schoolyard with acid burns, a broken jaw, and an eye injury so severe, it appeared his entire eye was gone.

Riley is now in a safe and loving home. But he will never be able to speak to the suffering he endured at the hands of his abuser. That’s why it’s up to us to speak up for him and the countless other animal victims of cruelty. The Animal Legal Defense Fund is fighting to pass a new law in California and other states to help give animal victims of abuse dedicated advocates in the courtroom in criminal cruelty cases, fighting for their interests and for the justice animals deserve.

While we fight to pass this much-needed legislation, you can give animal victims like Riley a voice by signing our pledge. Can I count on you to sign our pledge to report animal abuse and speak out to Stop Animal Cruelty, so we can demonstrate that animal abuse is still a serious crime that deserves attention?

Grizzly 399, who lives with her family in the Northern Rockies, is one of the best-known grizzly-bear mothers. Now her life is in danger.

The Trump administration has authorized a plan to kill up to 72 grizzlies in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem — which could include Grizzly 399 and her cubs if they move into the project area. This barbaric plan can't stand — so we just went to court to stop it. Please support our fight to save Yellowstone's grizzlies with a gift to the Predator Defense Fund. Grizzly bears have come out of hibernation in just the past few weeks. While they were sleeping, the U.S. Forest Service has refused to relent on its plan to let them be killed. It's sickening to think these beloved grizzlies could one day wake up to a gunshot. Female grizzlies with cubs have been documented occupying the areas where bears will be targeted, a grazing area in Wyoming's Bridger-Teton National Forest. The Forest Service wants to let up to 72 grizzlies be slaughtered even though grizzlies are protected by the Endangered Species Act. This plan is cruel, and it's also illegal. Giving the go-ahead to kill wildlife as a favor to industry is exactly the kind of behavior that has fueled the extinction crisis. Yellowstone's grizzlies, some of the most beloved in the world, are still threatened. By nature they have one of the slowest reproduction rates of any mammal. Each and every grizzly is precious. We're not about to let them get picked off without a fight. Every day 22 species go extinct — about one every hour. Humans created the extinction crisis due to centuries of habitat destruction, climate change and explosive population growth, but with bold ideas we can fix it. It starts with protecting endangered and threatened species.

Do You Know What Happens to Male Chicks in the Egg Industry?

Because the egg industry deems them useless, male chicks are crushed, ground up, drowned, and even burned alive. Most of them never get the chance to meet their moms, as many are gruesomely killed only at one-day-old.

No doubt you heard the news of the tiger at the Bronx Zoo that tested positive for CoVID-19. It answers a question that we’ve been grappling with for over a month, can non-humans contract the disease?

With so many of chimps either elderly or immuno-compromised, we’ve been enacting strict protocols since the very beginning. In fact, we are in Level 2 of a three level CoVID-19 plan that we developed to make certain our vulnerable chimps stay safe. Suspending the Campaign, Not the Movement: Sanders Pulls Out of 2020 Race But Will Stay on Ballot

Senator Bernie Sanders has suspended his campaign for the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination, making former Vice President Joe Biden the presumptive nominee to face Donald Trump in November. Sanders says he will stay on the ballot in remaining primary races and continue to assemble delegates. We play highlights from Sanders’s speech to supporters in a live stream on Wednesday. “Together, we have transformed American consciousness as to what kind of nation we can become, and have taken this country a major step forward in the never-ending struggle for economic justice, social justice, racial justice and environmental justice,” he said.

One Mask for Five 12-Hour Shifts: Harlem Hospital Nurses Demand Better Protection Amid Pandemic

As New York state's death toll from coronavirus passes 4,000, nurses and medical workers on the frontlines in New York City are protesting for better protections. We go to a demonstration outside Harlem Hospital to speak with Sarah Dowd, a registered nurse who works in its medical/surgical unit and has been treating COVID-19-positive patients. She is a member of the New York State Nurses Association union. "This is not a time for people to be sitting on the sidelines," Dowd says. "We need to make big demands of the system."

"Leaving Us Here to Die": Prisoners Plea for Release, Protection Amid Skyrocketing Infection Rates

U.S. Attorney General William Barr issued an emergency order Friday calling for the release of vulnerable federal prisoners into home confinement amid the coronavirus crisis. This news comes as at least 16 states have also released prisoners. We look at the treatment of incarcerated people in New York state, where Governor Andrew Cuomo has yet to grant anyone freedom despite at least 24 confirmed cases among state prisoners. Meanwhile, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio has said he'll release about 300 people from Rikers Island and other city jails, but advocates are calling for far more to be freed. We speak to José Diaz, a New York University graduate student who was just released from Rikers on Saturday morning. We also speak with José Saldana, director of the group Releasing Aging People in Prison.

NY Bishop Explains Why St John Divine Cathedral Is Working with Fundamentalist Group During Pandemic

As millions of worshipers around the globe enter the month of April preparing to celebrate Holy Week, Passover and Ramadan in the age of coronavirus, Cathedral of St. John the Divine in Manhattan is set to open its doors to 400 beds for non-COVID-19 patients to make more space in the hospitals for those suffering from the coronavirus. But there's a catch: The city is partnering with the Christian fundamentalist group Samaritan's Purse, led by Franklin Graham, a virulently Islamophobic, anti-choice and anti-LGBTQ preacher. Last week, the group erected an emergency field hospital in Central Park to treat spillover patients from Mount Sinai Hospital. New York Mayor Bill de Blasio has promised to send aides to monitor the group to prevent discrimination against patients. We speak to Bishop Clifton Daniel, the dean of the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York City, who says he rejects the values of Samaritan's Purse but welcomes their help regardless. "We are in the business of saving lives and helping people," Dean Daniel says. "If you are in the desert dying of thirst and somebody hands you a glass of water, you don't check their driver's license. You just say 'thank you.'"

Comedian and actor Ricky Gervais says "...it's a couple of quid but it makes a huge difference". Thanks so much for your support Ricky - you are so right! At this critical time please give what you can to help us care for more bears rescued from bile farms.

Make the Most of Staying Indoors with Your Companion Animals

Staying home isn't so bad when you have the companionship of a rescued animal

Aurora and Goldie bear hug it out.

Everyone could do with a big bear hug at the moment. Aurora and Goldie are the sun bears for the job! Aurora (left) knows too well how terrible isolation can be having spent 15 years alone in a tiny cage. Goldie (right) was poached as a cub and probably lost his mother to the traffickers. Since we rescued them to our Vietnam Bear Rescue Centre their rehabilitation has been just remarkable. We will never abandon these very special and playful bears, whatever the crisis. They're a reminder that there is light at the end of every tunnel. Please share this big bear hug with someone you'd like to give a hug to right now.

Blissful time in the pool with rescued moon bears. Our rescued moon bears prove that there's light at the end of the tunnel. After years or decades in enforced isolation you've helped create new blissful lives.

Also visit www.animalsasia.org/donate if you'd like to show Aurora and Goldie some love too!

#QuarantineTip - A workout with rescued animals Last February @Rebecca-Louise visited our LIONSROCK Big Cat Sanctuary and shot some of her motivating fitness videos there. She uses this kind of communication to raise awareness about animal welfare, thanks so much for that. Our rescued animals definitely enjoyed the welcomed relief - check out her workout series on YouTube, click here and try out a workout with lion Saeed in the background: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5rJ9j...

NYC nurse calls to nationalize the U.S. healthcare system

As New York state's death toll from coronavirus passes 4,000, nurses and medical workers on the frontlines in New York City are protesting for better protections. Sarah Dowd, a registered nurse who works in its medical/surgical unit and has been treating COVID-19-positive patients, spoke to Democracy Now! from the demonstration she helped organize outside Harlem Hospital on Monday. She is a member of the New York State Nurses Association union. "The issue here is that we are looking at a system of healthcare — not just in New York, but throughout the country — that prioritizes extracting a profit," says Dowd, who supports Medicare for All but says the U.S. should go even further, such as nationalizing the healthcare system. "This is what happens when you have people running the system that are not direct workers, when they're absorbed with their bottom line, and the politicians who write the policy are owned by them — and really the people that suffer are the people on the frontlines and the patients."

AOC on Bernie Sanders and the future of progressive politics

New York congressmember Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who has endorsed Bernie Sanders for president, says that while both she and the senator are pushing for more comprehensive relief in the face of the coronavirus, the fight for a more progressive future continues. Ocasio-Cortez cites single-payer healthcare systems, an agenda to address the climate crisis, liveable wages and justice for incarcerated people and immigrants as issues that need serious attention. "We need to make sure that there are very strong accommodations made for a progressive future in our country," she says. "We need to have a strong agenda across the board." She did not confirm that Sanders will continue as a presidential candidate until the Democratic National Convention but stated that he "makes these decisions one day at a time" and is looking ahead to the next primary.

Journalist on Wisconsin Election: Republicans Are Letting People Die in Order to Hang On to Power...Risking death to vote: Wisconsin Republicans refuse to delay elections during the pandemic

Lines stretching city blocks, hours-long waits and polling officials in hazmat suits. That's the scene voters in Wisconsin encountered as they braved the polls Tuesday amid the coronavirus pandemic. Despite growing outcry about the risks to public health and safety that in-person voting would pose, on Monday the state Supreme Court blocked Democratic Governor Tony Evers's ruling to delay the election until June. At least 92 people in Wisconsin have died from exposure to COVID-19. In Milwaukee — the most diverse city in Wisconsin — the number of polling stations went from 180 to five. We speak with Jesse Wegman, longtime journalist and member of The New York Times editorial board.

Wisconsinites headed to the polls Tuesday amid the coronavirus pandemic, despite growing outcry about the risks to public health and safety that in-person voting would pose. This came after the Republican state legislature refused to consider delaying elections or sending all voters mail-in ballots. "We're watching, right now, a purge of Wisconsin voters," says New York Times journalist and author Jesse Wegman, who argues that Republicans' foothold on power depends on a low voter turnout. "They got their purge yesterday, by keeping so many voters home, by forcing others to show up who now may end up getting sick and dying — literally. And

Amazon “Profiting from This Pandemic” as Warehouse Workers Walk Off Job to Demand Safer Conditions

Just a week after Amazon fired a worker who led a walkout, workers at the same Staten Island warehouse walked off the job again Monday to protest unsafe working conditions as online orders soar during the pandemic. We get an update from Angeles Solis, lead organizer at Make the Road New York, which helped organize the strike. Solis helps lead the group’s Beyond Amazon coalition in New York City. If Amazon doesn’t do more to protect workers, “they are not only profiting from this pandemic, but they’re helping to perpetuate it,” Solis says. We also talk about mutual aid organizing among immigrant and low-income communities, and Make the Road’s COVID-19 Emergency Response Fund.

You Won’t Believe What Happened to These Chained Dogs

THIS is just one reason keeping dogs chained is cruelty — and it’s more common than you’d think. These collars were SO TIGHT that they grew into and embedded in dogs’ necks! Stop this from ever happening to dogs near you.

Students Caught Playing with Dissected Cats' Intestines

According to two videos, which were posted publicly on Facebook and sent to PETA by a concerned whistleblower, students at Winston Churchill High School in Texas played “jump rope” with a dissected cat’s intestines.

The Fashion Industry Doesn’t Want You to Know These Facts About Cashmere

Do you know the effects cashmere has on the environment? It's estimated that 70% of Mongolia’s grasslands have degraded largely because of the demand for it. Desertification like this can cause dust storms reaching all the way to the U.S.

Anyone who has ever felt or even thought of the pain of losing a loved one knows that there is nothing quite as excruciating. Every pet owner's nightmare is waking up and finding that his/her beloved one has been taken. Across Southeast Asia, this is a reality for millions of dogs and cats that get stolen and killed for the dog and cat meat trade. Please support our campaign against this horrible crime http://bit.ly/DogAndCatMeat

Blind kitten sits in a parking lot and wonders how will she survive in this world.

Luckily for Kenshi, Hope For Paws got a call about her, and things turned around quickly once JoAnn Wiltz and Katie McKittrick arrived.

I really hope this will help convince you to join us with a small donation: https://www.HopeForPaws.org Two days after the rescue, the mom, dad and the two siblings were captured too. The mom and dad never had human contact, so Loreta Hernandez and Jessica Holguin got them spayed/neutered, vaccinated, and released. They are fed daily, and they are happy. It is important to understand that there are THREE MILLION feral cats in Los Angeles and it's a real challenge. The best we can do is to try and get as many as possible fixed. Kitten season is almost here, and it's just a nightmare to be born to these conditions and I feel so sad for the ones we never hear about.

If you would like to see a longer version that includes the surgical procedure, you can see it here: https://rumble.com/user/HopeForPaws - it's not for everybody...the surgery shows the removal of the eyes, but it really brings you closer to the things they have to deal with.

Kenshi was adopted to the most amazing home - you just have to see this kitten with the dogs at the end! Kung Lao and Raiden are still looking for a home, and if you would like to adopt them, please contact our friends at: https://www.KittyBungalow.org Thanks for sharing our videos with your friends who LOVE cats :-) Eldad
