Weak, starving and undernourished, Southern Resident orcas are on the edge of extinction, and females are miscarrying at a terrifying rate. Only 76 of these endangered orcas remain.

We need to raise $80,000 during our 2019 Summer Membership Drive to help protect these orcas, vulnerable whales and our oceans. YOU can be a part of our work to make that happen.

We are actively working with partners throughout the Pacific Northwest to develop sweeping recovery goals and bold action to recover the salmon that these orcas desperately need to survive.

With support from Wavemakers like you, we’re calling on key decision makers to:

  1. Prioritize and accelerate habitat restoration for Chinook salmon.

  2. Increase and maximize beneficial spill over the lower Snake and Columbia River dams and support actions to remove the four lower Snake River dams.

  3. Increase and secure funding for pollution prevention and clean-up programs.

  4. Commit to a noise reduction goal with immediate actions to reduce harmful noise.

We can’t stop now though – maintaining our momentum depends on achieving the goal to keep critically endangered Southern Resident orcas from disappearing for good and protect the world’s oceans.

Study Discovers Dolphin Bachelors Use Wingmen

Emily Peterson from In defense of Animals writes, Do male dolphins have the equivalent of a “wingman?” According to a recent study, the answer is yes! Male dolphins in South Australia have been found to work with other males to court potential mates – a cooperative behavior that is virtually impossible for dolphins in captivity.

In the wild, male dolphins form social groups with other males, typically with those in their bloodline, to increase their chances with “the ladies,” and ultimately, reproduction. Lead researcher, Dr. Fernando Diaz-Aguirre explains that the male dolphins in south Australia’s Coffin Bay might form these groups with relatives because, “the groups clearly tend to favour relationships based on blood relations.” Simply put, dolphins, similar to humans, feel the most comfortable with family!

Sadly, males in captivity are unable to form these dynamic social groups with their relatives. Instead, their ability to control their reproduction is stolen from them while they are held in tanks with random groups of dolphins.

Captive females are also denied any control over their socialization and are often forced to undergo the invasive and unpleasant procedure of artificial insemination. Unable to form natural social groups or control their reproduction, dolphins in captivity are deprived of two essential and vital aspects of their lives.

Please consider helping to support our critical advocacy work for dolphins and whales.

And, Sarah Lucas at Action for Dolphins reports how it has been an exciting few weeks for the five dolphins currently residing at Dolphin Marine Conservation Park. UK expert Dr Isabella Clegg has been observing their behaviours to see how the dolphins might fare in a sanctuary environment.

Dr Clegg has a background in animal behaviour and welfare, and a Masters in Marine Mammal Science. As part of her PhD, Dr Clegg developed her own cetacean welfare index, the C-Well Index.

Dr Clegg conducting her observationsDolphins are sentient and emotional beings. A number of welfare considerations need to be taken into account to ensure they can thrive in a sanctuary.

Dr Clegg has been observing each dolphin’s individual behaviours and personalities. The data she collects will be vital for transitioning them to sea pens.

Dr Clegg speaking to NBN News about the animal welfare assessment

Dr Clegg has experience working with sanctuary projects around the world. Her assessment is a vital step in the feasibility study to building Australia’s first dolphin sanctuary.

We have potential locations and designs ready for the sanctuary, as well as input from animal welfare experts around the world. It’s all coming together, but there are still tests to complete before we can try to build it.

Canada passes 'Free Willy' bill banning whale and dolphin captivity

Canada's House of Commons passed a bill Monday to make it illegal to hold a whale, dolphin or porpoise captive, punishable by fines up to $150,000 USD.

It's known colloquially as the "Free Willy" bill, named after the 1993 movie in which a young boy frees a killer whale from a US amusement park."Nothing fantastic ever happens in a hurry. But today we celebrate that we have ended the captivity and breeding of whales and dolphins. This is news to splash a fin at," animal rights group Humane Canada said in a tweet

The bill is expected to become law. It was introduced in the Senate in December 2015 and was already approved there but must return now and gain "royal assent."

Frustrated by the increase in family homelessness she saw across Washington DC, Kelly Sweeney McShane and her organization Community of Hope decided to try something different. The Green Party of Canada celebrated in a statement Monday.

"These intelligent, social mammals will now get to live where they belong -- in the ocean," the party said.Dozens of supporters of the bill used the hashtag #emptythetanks to celebrate on social media.

The bill makes exceptions if the animals are rescues, in rehabilitation or licensed for scientific research, or when it's in the animal's best interests."A person may move a live cetacean from its immediate vicinity when the cetacean is injured or in distress and is in need of assistance," the bill states.

As Americans head to the beaches this summer, it’s easier than ever to feel grateful for our beautiful oceans and coastline. But President Trump is trying to expand dirty and dangerous offshore drilling, and that could change the face of America’s beaches forever.

Make no mistake, opening the floodgates to dirty and dangerous offshore drilling is a catastrophe waiting to happen for ocean wildlife, coastal communities and our oceans. It simply isn’t worth the risk.

Right now, your member of Congress has the power to block President Trump’s shortsighted plan – and needs to hear from YOU before this important vote.

President Trump’s offshore drilling plan would open more than 90 percent of our oceans to offshore drilling, and it’s time for Congress to ensure this does not happen. We desperately need 30,000 Wavemakers like YOU to contact your lawmakers and say with one united voice: Protect our coast from new dirty and dangerous offshore drilling!

I emailed you today because your Representative is preparing to vote on H.R. 3052, the Interior-Environment funding bill, and this is a huge opportunity. Proposed amendments to this bill could block expanded offshore drilling and Atlantic seismic airgun blasting! We can’t let this opportunity slip by.

If there was ever a time to make your voice heard, it’s now. President Trump’s radical offshore drilling plan is a clear example of special interest politics over people, which is why it is vital we continue to fight back and keep the pressure on lawmakers.

Opposition to dirty and dangerous offshore oil is widespread and bipartisan. Over 2,200 elected officials from the local, state and federal level – Republicans and Democrats – have opposed or expressed concern with expanded offshore drilling and exploration, as well as:

  • Every East and West Coast governor

  • More than 360 local municipalities

  • Alliances representing over 46,000 businesses and over 500,000 fishing families

It’s on us to make sure our elected leaders protect our coast by ensuring no new drilling and spilling poisons along our shores – not now, not ever.

In exciting marine conservation news, the United Kingdom has declared 41 new marine conservation zones (MCZs)! There are now a total of 91 MCZs in the U.K., with 89 in English waters and 2 in Northern Ireland offshore waters. This action is a step in a three-stage process, and a leap in the right direction to allow the marine ecosystems in the UK– and all over the world–  a chance to recover and flourish for the next generation.  Read More!

Plaintiffs ask Wakayama court to halt permits for Taiji dolphin hunts, citing Japan's animal cruelty laws

The Wakayama District Court began hearing arguments Friday over whether dolphin hunting violates animal cruelty laws.

The plaintiffs are asking the court to stop the permits from being issued.

Wakayama Gov. Yoshinobu Nisaka issues the permits for the town of Taiji, where the hunts have drawn protests. Taiji is also known for its centuries-old whaling traditions.

The 2009 Oscar-winning documentary “The Cove” showed the town’s hunts, where dolphins were chased into a cove and bludgeoned to death, turning the waters blood red. In recent years, they changed their hunting method to suffocation.

The plaintiffs, a former Taiji resident and activist Ren Yabuki, and supporters of the case, say the killings remain traumatic and painful, despite the new method.

Wakayama conservation official Takashi Uede declined comment on the case but stressed that the prefecture believes the hunts follow the law.

The case does not demand monetary damages but could set a precedent in contesting the legality of the killings, according to Takashi Takano, the lawyer for the plaintiffs. “If these people can’t contest the permit, then who can,” he said.

Taiji officials and fishermen have defended the hunt as tradition and say eating dolphin meat is no different from eating beef or chicken. However, the hunts are also lucrative in that some dolphins are sold into captivity at aquariums and marine shows.

The government stands behind commercial whaling and is pulling out of the International Whaling Commission. Whalers are making plans to resume commercial hunting in July, for the first time in three decades.

Taiji is expected to be one of the Pacific coastal towns joining the whaling fleet.

Demand an End to Swim-With-The-Dolphins Facilities

The horrific dolphin hunt in Taiji, Japan starts each year on September 1st and lasts for six months. All of the dolphins and whales that are hunted down and kept alive, have to witness the violent death of many of their beloved family/pod members before being brutally transported off to small pools/pens where they will live as traumatized, enslaved victims solely for the purpose of human entertainment and corporate greed.  It is primarily because of tour operators and cruise lines that there is a huge demand for captive dolphins and whales, as well as other marine life.

As long as tour operators keep promoting and selling tickets and cruise lines keep transporting tourists to these facilities, the violent hunts will continue as will the inhumane breeding of many of the captive animals.

Please don't buy a ticket to dolphanariums or other venues (circuses, zoos, etc.) that have animals, and be sure to spread the word to others who are not aware ot this inhumane industry.  It is so important that we help put an end to the hunting, terrorizing and enslaving of these precious beings, and to work towards creating safe havens where all of the animals currently being held captive can be rehabilitated and returned to their homes in nature.

Details from dolphinproject.com: "Officials have confirmed to Dolphin Project that on March 1, the 2018/19 drive season in Taiji, Japan ended. A total of 797 dolphins from seven species were taken captive and/or slaughtered. Worldwide demand for dolphin entertainment is the reason wild dolphins are caught. Compared to last year, 135 more dolphins were taken captive. It’s imperative that we continue to keep the pressure on and say NO to the dolphin show!"
