A Mississippi Tornado Left Our Hope Animal Sanctuary in Ruins!

Recent storms have ripped across the southern US, tearing through rural areas bringing hurricane-force winds, flooding, sustained rains, and unprecedented storm damage. No place was safe, not even our beloved Hope Animal Sanctuary.

Feeding animals is one of the biggest expenses for shelters and rescue groups. After food costs, they often have little or nothing left in their budget for medical treatment, vaccines or other adoption programs.

Your donations help GreaterGood.org’s Rescue Bank program ship donated food to rescue groups around the country. This ensures that their animals are properly fed and that the shelters have extra money in their budgets to help pets in desperate need of medical attention.

Moon bear Mai suffered over a decade of abuse. Trapped in a barren cage on bear bile farm, she was regularly knocked unconscious and had her body punctured with needles which sucked out her bile for use in traditional medicine.

For Mai, the long-term chronic stress and malnutrition caused cataracts leaving her almost completely blind, while her friends Newtie and Mekong continue to undergo treatment for dental disease.

Both have had multiple diseased teeth extracted and a veterinary dental specialist is working with the sanctuary vet team to help save what teeth can be salvaged.

All three bears were initially fearful of returning to the outside world, but now even Mai plays happily outside, swimming in her pool and foraging for food on the grass.

Suzana and Bruno Last week we rescued the two bears from their barren cages.

Now, at the Bear Refuge Kuterevo (a partnership of FOUR PAWS in Croatia), the bears can finally begin a species-appropriate life.

The day of their rescue was very intense and emotional for all of us.

But every animal life we save gives us the strength, motivation and inspiration to tirelessly continue our work.

Albania’s #SaddestBears : Roccos wonderful journey!

In the beginning of June we rescued bear Rocco from the narrow concrete-cage he was kept in. He has been in a desperate situation and was constantly trying to bite on the iron bars that kept him locked in.

Our team was able to get him out of his prison and transferred him from Albania to our BEAR SANCTUARY Müritz (BÄRENWALD Müritz) in Germany 🇩🇪. Since his arrival, everyone is doing their best to take care of him so that he feels comfortable in his new surroundings.

While Rocco will still need a lot of rest and time to recover, he is doing well so far and we are optimistic that the bear will fully recoup from the horrible things he had to endure. Please keep helping with Rocco's future! http://bit.ly/save-rocco

Helping Horses in lndonesia

Last August, our disaster relief team responded to the earthquakes that hit Lombok and the Gili Islands in Indonesia.

Recently the team returned to the islands to follow up on the animals and to provide additional help. With hard work and dedication, the Islands have recovered remarkably well from the destruction caused by the earthquakes.

Also the horses are in much better shape now.

But there is still a lot to do to improve the situation for animals in the region. Thanks to Horses of Gili our equine veterinarian was able to provide medical care and share knowledge with local veterinarians from our partner Bali Animal Welfare Association .

We are grateful for all the dedicated people working for the animals.

When Good Samaritans came across Eve who was digging through dumpsters in Butte County, they didn't know what she was. She was almost completely without fur and extremely emaciated. They thought she was an aardvark.

The California Department of Fish & Wildlife was called in to assist and quickly realized that this was not an aardvark but a very sick black bear.

Two volunteers from the CDFW drove her down to The Funds for Animal Wildlife Center in Ramona, CA (an affiliate of the Humane Society of the United States) where she was rushed into emergency treatment. She arrived on Christmas Eve 12/24/2017. Arriving when she did was likely a miracle, since she only had days to live her condition was so severe. She was nicknamed Eve in honor of the holiday.

Her road to recovery would be a long one. Mange takes time to recover from and she would need to time to grow out her coat.

The hope was to treat Eve and release her back in the wild. But after nearly a year and a half in treatment, her hair has still not grown out completely meaning she would have difficulty hibernating in the cold winters or protecting herself from potentially other bears attacks or from the forest floor in general. A scratch could lead to greater issues.

It was decided by The Fund for Animals Wildlife, that Eve could not be returned to the wild. At this time, Eve is waiting for her brand new large, natural enclosure at Cleveland Amory Black Beauty Ranch in Texas to be complete.

Then she will be transported there to live out her days in "5 star accommodations."

They say a dog is man’s best friend, but caring friends come in all shapes and sizes!

Besides having many four-legged friends, Mia enjoys cuddling sessions with her human friend once in a while.

Mia was rescued from terrible conditions; she was tethered in a small stable for many years, surrounded by her own excrement, unable to turn around or even walk more than a few steps, and lived without any social interactions.

Luckily, she can leave this all behind her now that she’s got a new home – the sanctuary Lebenshof Gut Weidensee.

Here, Mia can spend the rest of her life on open green pastures!

In this rescue Simon and Lawrie attempt to save a young coot chick, that had fishing wire tangled around its beak.

Whilst going around in circles trying to net the coot, they also manage to get the boat all caught up!

Sparrowhawk rescues always fill us with a little bit of dread here at Wildlife Aid! Whilst the quickest we've done lasted just ten minutes, the longest went on for almost SEVEN hours!

Luckily for this bird, the building it had decided to fly into was much smaller than normal, but it would still be a tricky job to get it safely contained and released back into the wild...

A female dog is recovering after someone tortured her, leaving her body ripped to bits, with bite marks and scars covering her legs, chest and head — her ears so lacerated they may be beyond repair.

When we got the call about Chaplin, Loreta Frankonyte and I rushed to the location and didn't have time to get a cheeseburger.

In what they described as a “chilling scene,” animal control officers in Woodbridge, Connecticut found the canine so gravely injured, they believe someone used her as a bait dog in fights.

The poor dog, whom rescuers named Merritt after the street on which she was finally rescued, was also malnourished and weak from hunger. Merritt’s back leg sustained such terrible injuries that a veterinarian had to amputate the shattered limb in order to give the dog the best chance of a pain-free life.

A witness notified WAC of Merritt’s plight after they saw multiple cars hit the mastiff mix as she ran, terrified, across Merritt Parkway. The first SUV hit her in the shoulder. The second completely dislocated her rear left leg so badly, it was facing the other direction.

“Merritt could not wait to get in our crate once we arrived,” WAC said in a Facebook post. “It was if we could hear her sigh of relief that she was in a space where she thought she was safe. It was there that we realized the true horror that this poor girl had been living.”

We must speak out against this brutal animal cruelty and ensure that the person who caused Merritt — and possibly other dogs — such severe suffering is brought to justice.

Sign this petition to urge Woodbridge Police Chief Frank P. Cappiello to investigate this heinous crime against innocent Merritt and ensure the culprit is prosecuted with the full force of the law.

A Good News Story: Miracle Kitten by Paige Alonso On her way to the funeral of Salena Lesniak, Senator Lesniak’s wife who died suddenly last Tuesday, Judge Sue saw an injured cat alongside the roadway. Here’s her story … Driving up Route 9 at approximately 7:15 a.m., I saw a little cat in the second lane of the highway getting passed by cars that barely missed him. As I passed, I saw his head go up and realize he was alive. What would Salena do? I asked. Rescue the cat! 

I went down the highway, through the ShopRite parking lot to get back onto Route 9. The light was red for Route 9 traffic, so I saw my chance 一 Pull up fast. Stop car. Hit flashers. Jump out. Grab cat. It’s alive and hissing at me with its claws dug into the pavement. Toss him into my car. Close the door and drive off before the light changes. 

Now I am crying and shaking like a leaf. What to do? Call my vet. Not open. Call my friend Kristen totally raving. She suggests Garden State Veterinary Hospital in Iselin as it is just off the Parkway and I will pass it on the way North to Salena’s funeral Mass at Sacred Heart Cathedral in Newark.  

Call Garden State Veterinary Hospital to explain the situation. I need help to get the kitten out of the car. Go to hospital. Hospital aide has rubber gloves on and no blanket. I tried to grab the kitten who is resting on the floor. The kitten goes nuts running around in the car. I am afraid it will get out and get run over on Highway 27. Aide gets a blanket. I grab the kitten who bites my hand in 5 or 6 places along with a few scratches, but we get it inside.

I fill out papers. Name of cat? Unknown. Owner? Unknown. I say, “Please take care of it until we can be in touch later.” I need to go to the hospital for a rabies shot and infection prevention. I get an EMT to meet me at Trinitas. I get my rabies shot, antibiotics and x-ray at Trinitas Hospital and out the door in time to get to the church. Vet calls. Cat has ear cut badly.  Parts missing, end of tail debrided and bone sticking out. Needs partial amputation and displaced hip which needs surgery to steady it. They give the kitten sedation and fluids. He is eating. 

Senator Lesniak gets Brian Hackett, Brian Hackett, NJ state director for the Humane Society of the United States, involved. Brian calls me around 6:00 p.m. and says Monmouth County SPCA will assume responsibility for treatment and recovery. He is so sweet, and such a little baby, 3-4 months old. Dr. Levine of Garden State Animal Hospital has been wonderful, really caring as is the staff. They are taking great care of the little guy. 

To be continued, but it looks good for the miracle kitten. He’s resting comfortably.

Update about the declawed lioness and her siblings!

#SaveGazaAnimals Do you remember the three young lions Laith, Marion and Labwa - we rescued from Rafah Zoo in Gaza? After recovering from their ordeal, and starting a new life at the Al Ma'wa for Nature and Wildlife sanctuary in Jordan, which is run by the Princess Alia Foundation in partnership with FOUR PAWS, the big cats were ready for the next step.

Following a long and gentle introduction process, they have successfully been socialised with other lions living at the sanctuary.

Marion, Laith and Labwa enjoy playing and interacting with their new friends Pablo, Layla and Dohal. As soon as a larger enclosure for them is built, they will be able to move there and live as a proud pride of lions!

Mallard mothers are not always the greatest parents. They often make their nests in some very strange places and then struggle when it comes time to move the ducklings to water! we were recently called out to a mother and ducklings on a roof terrace in Guildford.

They were seven storeys up above a very busy street and would never have survived the journey to water.

Suzana and Bruno: two of Croatia's #Saddestbears. Being kept in two unlicensed zoos for decades, these brown bears experienced unimaginable neglect and abuse. Their days are endless with throngs of loud gawking visitors parading in front of their small cages, and nowhere to hide. 40-year-old Bruno seems very disoriented in his small cage and might be visually impaired. The decades of confinement have left their marks on 20-year-old Suzana. She shows severe stereotypic behaviour like paw baiting and pacing. They both desperately need our help! Change Nevada Law to Protect our Pets like we do our Children

SB 409 was introduced in Nevada by Mark Manendo, Nicole Cannizzaro, David Parks; Kelvin Atkinson, Yvanna Cancela, Moises Denis, Julia Ratti, Tick Segerblom, Pat Spearman and Joyce Woodhouse. (This bill was approved and signed into law by then Gov Sandoval on 6/4/17 - but it failed to protect the "Good Samaritan") 

Manendo, Cannizzaro and Parks were the primary sponsors of this bill. In short, the state gave immunity to First Responders should they need to break into a vehicle to save an animal in distress but failed to protect you and I, the everyday citizen! Read a full copy of the bill here.

The purpose of this petition is to get them to re-introduce a new bill this year to add "Good Samaritan" to Nevada State Law.

In Nevada it is illegal to leave a child or animal in a hot vehicle, however, according to State Law you can ONLY break in the vehicle to save the child. You can be held civilly AND criminally liable to saving the animal. It's time that changed!

Even on a perfectly lovely 75°F day, it only takes 10 minutes for the internal temperature of a car to rise above 100°F! And on a sweltering summer day at 100°F, it’s pretty much immediately too hot for an animal to be left in the car as temps can reach 150°F within minutes!

During an interview with a local TV Station on 6/28/19 in the late morning, it was 92°F outside. The inside of the vehicle was 74°F when the A/C and engine were shut off. Within 15 minutes, the inside temperature of the vehicle had climbed to 123°F and was still climbing when the interview ended.

In Nevada, the "Good Samaritan Law" protects Law Enforcement, Fire Fighters, Animal Control and other "First Responders" from any civil liability should they break a vehicle window to rescue a pet in distress that has been left in an extremely hot or cold car unattended. (NRS 202.575).

What we need is a law the protects a private citizen, like you or I, should we come face to face with this situation. As it is now, a private citizen is required to call 311 (or their local non-emergency phone number) to report the situation. A call to 911 is ONLY allowed when the pet is in serious danger of dying. You are NOT PERMITTED to touch the vehicle!

So, how do you know if there’s enough danger to the animal to require action? 1. How hot is too hot? * In areas like Las Vegas, even 70°F is to hot, because in a vehicle with the windows rolled up, temperatures can fly well past 100°F in a matter of minutes!

2. What can and should you do to help an animal in a hot or cold car? * According to Nevada State Law, you can't do ANYTHING, except call the police, and if and when they show up, hope the animal hasn't died by then.

3. Not to mention, what can you legally do to rescue that animal, and is it legal to break the car window? * It is ILLEGAL in Nevada to attempt or break into a vehicle to save an animal.

How State Rules Differ About Rescuing Animals From Hot Cars In many states, (AZ, CA, CO, DE, FL, IN, MA, OH, TN & WI) ordinary citizens are granted legal immunity if they damage someone’s vehicle to rescue “an animal.” There is pending legislation in AL & OR. Other states, like Nevada, DO NOT have “Good Samaritan” laws that protect ordinary citizens who rescue animals that are trapped in hot cars.

Of the states that have "Civilian Immunity" Laws in place, here are the average summer temps:

Arizona - 105°F California - 92°F Colorado - 90°F Delaware - 88°F Florida - 92°F Indiana - 85°F Massachusetts  - 81°F Ohio - 83°F Tennessee - 92°F Wisconsin - 80°F

Combined total, the above states average 88°F during the summer months. And then there's Nevada, which averages 101°F during the summer. Las Vegas pushes that average to a sweltering 106°F, nearly 20°F hotter than the average of the states above!

Does this mean that you could or should run around, willy-nilly, smashing car windows with rocks if you live in a state that grants you legal immunity? Of course not. What it does mean is that Nevada needs to get in line with several other states and protect our animals. Citizens can break a car window to save a child, but not an animal. This does not make sense!

Sign the petition to send a message to our Elected Officials that it's time to protect our animals like we do our children. Because to some, our animals ARE our children!
