This is No Life for a Tiger

Tigers used in Shrine circuses are hauled around in trailers for months on end and in all weather extremes. They have no space to exercise, climb, or even stretch to their full height, and spend much of their lives relegated to uncomfortable transport cages in arena basements and parking lots. They are frequently seen pacing in what little space they have, which is a sign of severe mental distress. These tigers are suffering. Shrine circuses must stop exploiting wild animals NOW. Visit https://support.peta.org/page/1860/ac... to help tigers today.

Gastroenterologist Urges People to Go Vegan to Fight Future Pandemics

PETA has teamed up with gastroenterologist Dr. Angie Sadeghi to break down the link between pandemics and eating animals. She points out that 75% of all recently emerged infectious diseases originated in animals before jumping to humans and urges everyone to go vegan to prevent future pandemics like COVID-19.

Arrival of worlds largest soy ship in Europe

To make room for soya fields used to feed suffering animals in European factory farms, deforestation in the Amazon is at an all-time high! One would think the EU would act to regulate the international soya trade and make sure forests aren’t destroyed in the process, right? However, our team documented the arrival of the largest soya shipment ever made! The shipment from Brazil was organized by a big meat producer and contained enough soya to cover an area the size of 70, 000 football fields! We have the chance to stop this from happening again. Tell the European Commission to pass a law to stop #deforestation now!

Former Tyson Foods 'Grower' Blows Whistle on Birds' Extreme Suffering

For more than four years, Curtis Jarvis operated a breeder chicken farm in Arkansas for Tyson Foods—and his allegations about the company are damning. He says that Tyson workers routinely crammed 40 birds into transport cages meant for 20 and left other cages with only a few birds, so chickens either suffocated under one another or, with too few animals to keep warm, froze to death during winter trips. According to Jarvis, as many as 300 chickens per load died in this way during transport or shortly after arriving at his facility.

62 bears killed on 1st day of N.J. bear hunt; opponents plan new lawsuit

Raymond Lesniak, the former Democratic state senator from Union County, used a Zoom press conference to announce that a coalition of animal rights activists plans to sue the state over the statutory makeup of the state fish and game council. The council currently consists of 11 members: Six sportsmen, recommended by the New Jersey State Federation of Sportsmen’s Clubs, three farmers recommended by the state agriculture convention, the chair of the state’s Endangered and Nongame Species Advisory Committee and one person with expertise in land management and soil conservation. Brian Hackett, the state director of the Humane Society of the United States’s New Jersey branch, argued its unfair that a council with such a make-up gets to decide how wildlife is managed in the Garden State. “Nobody is allowed on this fish and game council except for pro-hunting hunters, and pro-hunting farmers and some mysterious person who needs to know about soil,” Hackett said.

Get Justice for Illegally Trapped Coyote Who Was Shot Over 13 Times

In a gruesome display of animal cruelty, an "animal removal specialist" in California reportedly trapped and shot a coyote at least 13 times painfully in the head with an ineffective .22-caliber air pistol. Please call upon the District Attorney to do everything possible to get him convicted of felony animal cruelty, and urge the California Department of Fish and Wildlife to revoke his license if he is convicted. We must act now - before he strikes again! ACT NOW

U.S. Senators Must Protect Wild Horses and Burros!

In July, the U.S. House of Representatives required the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) to use $11 million of its Wild Horse and Burro Program budget for safe and humane fertility control. If we do not urgently contact our senators, mustangs and burros could be subject to the most disgusting and brutal sterilizations... which often prove deadly. Act now to save female equines from gruesome interference before it's too late! ACT NOW

Hero Caretakers Step Up for Animals in India as Odds Continue to Stack Against Them

Providing care and veterinary services to homeless animals in India is already a daunting task because the need is so great and so constant. However, we’re rising to the challenge and helping as many animals as we can amid a global pandemic and, now, record-breaking monsoons hitting Mumbai. LEARN MORE

Six wolves were spotted earlier this year in Colorado. Three have now been killed, maybe even shot on sight.

Those three wolves made the mistake of crossing into Wyoming, where it's legal to kill them throughout most of the state.

Wolves shouldn't be killed just for crossing boundaries they can't see.

Please support our fight for wolves with a gift to the Predator Defense Fund.

It's been decades since wolves raised pups in Colorado. The sightings this year gave hope to those who dearly wish to see the animals return.

But now half are gone, and the whereabouts and health of the other three are unknown.

The plight of these wolves points to the madness that has taken hold in states like Wyoming. In 85% of the state, wolves are designated as predatory animals and can be shot on sight year-round. In the remaining 15% of the state where a wolf-hunting license is required, it costs an in-state resident just $21 to kill a wolf.

And it's about to get much worse for gray wolves across the lower 48. Their loss of Endangered Species Act protection is imminent. We expect a final delisting rule in just weeks.

But despite the carnage in Wyoming and other northern Rocky Mountain states, hope remains.

Washington state will soon have rules that limit when wolves can be killed. California's Lassen pack, the only one in the state, grew by at least eight new pups this summer. And in the Southeast a legal victory we secured last week means the government must put a new red wolf recovery plan in place.

Wolves can come back and thrive. If we just give them the chance.

We're gearing up for the fight of a lifetime on their behalf — and we know we can win.

Our battles are long, but we're not going anywhere. Not when so many wolves and other species are counting on us.

Idaho Animal Law Enforcement

On July 23rd of 2020, a woman who was videotaped punching a dog was not charged due to "insufficient evidence". The video had surfaced and went viral in a matter of seconds. The video spread so rapidly, that even the Idaho Humane Society started an investigation. This had taken place in May and the IHS was waiting for the Idaho Prosecutor's office to review the case, which they then decided that the woman in the video would NOT be charged. Below is a statement from the City of Boise.

"The City declined charges due to insufficient evidence to prosecute under relevant state and city code. We have an ethical obligation to not proceed on cases where there is insufficient evidence to meet the burden of proof."

Although there were no injuries to the animal, this type of abuse which was considered "just playing around", should not be tolerated.

I've started this petition in hope that Animal protection will be enforced more to a higher standard. The video has been removed, but can still be found on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook. The evidence is very visible and is frightening that the City of Boise states there is insufficient evidence.

NY Strip Steak

Serves 4-5

Ingredients For the Steak:

  • 2 cups (500 mL) vital wheat gluten flour

  • 3 tablespoons (45 mL) nutritional yeast

  • 1 teaspoon (5 mL) sea salt

  • 1 cup (250 mL) water

  • 3 tablespoons (45 mL) dry red wine

  • 2 tablespoons (30 mL) tamari

  • 2 tablespoons (30 mL) vegetable oil

  • 1 tablespoon (15 mL) + 1 1/2 teaspoons (7 mL) tomato paste

  • 1 tablespoon (15 mL) + 1 1/2 teaspoons (7 mL) Dijon mustard

  • 1 tablespoon (15 mL) garlic powder

For the Broth:

  • 4 quarts (4 L) water

  • 1/2 cup (125 mL) tamari

  • 1/4 cup (60 mL) dry red wine 4 cloves garlic

  • 4 sprigs fresh thyme

For the Marinade:

  • 1/4 cup (60 mL) dry red wine

  • 1/4 cup (60 mL) vegetable oil

  • 2 tablespoons (30 mL) tamari

  • 1 tablespoon (15 mL) Dijon mustard

  • 1 tablespoon (15 mL) chopped fresh thyme leaves

  • 4 cloves garlic, roughly chopped

Preparation To Make the Seitan Dough:

  1. In a medium bowl, combine the wheat gluten flour, nutritional yeast, and salt. Whisk until well combined and no lumps remain.

  2. In a blender, combine the water, red wine, tamari, vegetable oil, tomato paste, mustard, and garlic powder. Blend until completely smooth.

  3. Pour the water mixture into the wheat gluten our mixture. Using your hands, mix until well combined. You do not want to see any dry patches of our left. Transfer the dough to a work surface and knead to develop the gluten. Shape the mixture into a rectangle about 6 inches (15 cm) long and 1 1/2 inches (4 cm) thick.

  4. Prepare the broth and cook the seitan dough Place the dough in a wide, large pot and add the water, tamari, red wine, garlic, and thyme.

  5. Bring to a boil, uncovered. Reduce the heat to a simmer and cook for 35 to 40 minutes. The seitan is done when the middle is no longer chewy or no longer has the texture of raw dough. It should be slightly spongy but firm to the touch. Remove from the heat and set aside until the seitan is cool enough to handle in the liquid, about 1 hour.

  6. Make the marinade In a medium bowl, whisk together the red wine, vegetable oil, tamari, mustard, thyme, and garlic.

  7. Once the seitan is cool enough to handle, remove it from the broth and cut it into 4 or 5 steaks of equal size. Lay the steaks at in a 13- × 9-inch (3.5 L) baking dish and pour the marinade over top. Flip to make sure that all sides of the steaks are covered with the marinade. Marinate for at least 1 hour or overnight. If marinating overnight, cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate.

  8. Cook the steaks Remove the steaks from the marinade and pat dry using a clean kitchen towel or paper towel. Discard the marinade. Grill, broil, or pan-fry.

To Grill the Steaks:

  1. Preheat a grill to medium-high heat and lightly oil the grill with vegetable oil by adding a little to a kitchen towel. Rub the oil on the grill to help prevent the steaks from sticking. Place the steaks on the grill and do not move them or push down, as this will cause them to burn.

  2. Cook until golden brown and sizzling, 4 to 5 minutes per side.

To Broil the Steaks:

  1. Turn the broiler on high and place the steaks on a baking sheet. Place under the broiler and cook until golden brown, 4 to 5 minutes per side.

To Pan-Fry the Steaks:

  1. Heat enough vegetable oil in a sauté pan over medium-high heat. Cook until golden brown and sizzling, 4 to 5 minutes per side.

Creamy Lentil and Roasted Vegetable Bake

8 servings

CASSEROLE 1 medium head of cauliflower, cut into florets 3 cups peeled and chopped butternut squash 1 large sweet potato, peeled and chopped 3 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil, divided Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper 1 large sweet onion, diced 6 garlic cloves, minced 12 ounces (1½ cups) French green (Puy) lentils 4 cups low-sodium vegetable broth or water Small handful of thyme sprigs 4 tablespoons tahini 2 tablespoons yellow or white miso paste 2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar Chopped Italian flat-leaf parsley, for serving

CASHEW CREAM 1 cup raw cashews, soaked 1 hour in boiling water 2 garlic cloves 2 tablespoons nutritional yeast 1½ tablespoons freshly squeezed lemon juice Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper

CRISPY PINE NUT TOPPING 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil ½ cup panko bread crumbs ½ cup pine nuts

1. MAKE THE CASSEROLE: Preheat the oven to 400°F. Toss the cauliflower florets, butternut squash and sweet potato with 1½ tablespoons of the olive oil; season generously with salt and pepper. Transfer the vegetables to sheet trays and roast, tossing once, until they are browned and soft, 25 to 30 minutes. Lower the heat to 350°F.

2. While the vegetables are roasting, pour the remaining 1½ tablespoons olive oil into a large, deep skillet or Dutch oven and heat over medium heat. Add the diced onion and cook until lightly browned, 5 to 7 minutes. Add the garlic and cook, stirring frequently, until fragrant, about 2 minutes.

3. Add the lentils, vegetable broth and thyme sprigs to the skillet. Bring to a boil, then reduce to a rapid simmer. Simmer until most of the liquid is absorbed and the lentils are tender but still al dente, 25 to 30 minutes. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

4. Remove the thyme sprigs from the lentils and stir in the tahini, miso paste and balsamic vinegar.

5. MAKE THE CASHEW CREAM: While the vegetables are roasting and the lentils are cooking, add the drained cashews, garlic, nutritional yeast, lemon juice and ½ cup plus 2 tablespoons water to the bowl of a high-powered blender. Season with salt and pepper, and blend until smooth and creamy. Alternatively, you can prepare the cashew cream up to two days in advance.

6. Layer the roasted veggies and cooked lentils in a 13-by-9-inch or 3-liter casserole pan. Drizzle the cashew cream on top and bake for 20 minutes at 350°F.

7. PREPARE THE CRISPY PINE NUT TOPPING: Meanwhile, heat the olive oil in a nonstick skillet over medium heat. Add the panko bread crumbs and stir until beginning to brown, about 3 minutes. Transfer to a bowl, cool slightly and then stir in the pine nuts.

8. Sprinkle the pine nut mixture over the casserole and then place the dish under the broiler for a few minutes until the topping is golden (keep a careful watch, as pine nuts can burn easily). Allow the casserole to cool for 5 minutes before serving. Garnish with chopped parsley.
