Hanukkah is the festival of lights, and it’s also a festival of oil. For this holiday, Jews celebrate the miracle of a tiny bit of oil lasting eight long nights with family gatherings, food, and games. Observers whip up dishes such as potato pancakes and jelly donuts and play dreidel, spinning for a handful of gelt.

Get into the Hanukkah spirit with the following delicious vegan dishes and cruelty-free holiday gift ideas:

Holidays, family, and memories – they go together like “chicken” soup and vegan matzo balls. This Vegan Matzoh Ball Soup by Rhea Parsons may not be exactly the same as the traditional version but sometimes it’s good to break from tradition a bit.

Making vegan matzoh balls is one thing and making them gluten-free is a whole other thing. Jennifer Strohmeyer‘s Vegan Matzoh Ball Vegetable Soup can be made either way. Quinoa makes the matzoh balls gluten-free but still fluffy and delicious.

Kugel is like a giant latke pie! It’s certainly easier to make and healthier than frying up a bunch of latkes. This Potato and Onion Kugel by Rhea Parsons is topped with sauteed apples instead of the usual apple sauce, but you can serve it with vegan sour cream as well. Bake this in muffin tins for individual servings.

Pot Roast

This is Not Your Mama’s Seitan Pot Roast by Dawn Kriss. In lieu of meat, it has tender homemade seitan in a lip-smacking vegetable stew.  Plus, the pot roast is made in a slow cooker, so you can just throw everything in, go about your day, and come home to a warm, comforting meal.

Actor and mother Mayim Bialik has the perfect egg-free recipe for you.

You can go with a classic savory latke, or make sweet potato latkes for a fun twist—egg-free, of course! Serve your latkes with applesauce and store-bought dairy-free sour cream, or make your own.

Travel the globe with these 5 Vegan Latke Recipes by Rhea Parsons. There are Italian, Spanish, Indian, Chinese, and Greek latkes, each with its own special dipping sauce. You could have a latke party and wow people with the unexpected. Let’s get started and celebrate Chanukah with these global latkes.

Sweet Potato Latkes with Chutney Sour Cream and Curried Onion-Apple-White Bean Topping

Latkes get all fancied up with Betsy DiJulio‘s Sweet Potato Latkes with Chutney Sour Cream and Curried Onion Apple White Bean Topping. These are golden, delicious, filling, and festive with bold flavors that make them extra-special.

Strawberry Cheese Blintzes with Strawberry Basil Compote

Blintzes can be savory or they can be sweet like these Strawberry Cheese Blintzes by Rhea Parsons. The filling is vegan ricotta with a sweet side. It gets a pink tinge from strawberry cream cheese. Topped with a strawberry basil compote, this is a sweet dish that’s perfect for brunch.

Vegan Latkes (Gluten-Free and Baked Variations)

You only need one tried-and-true recipe for Latkes. These latkes by Nava Atlas have oatmeal in place of eggs to hold them together. For a gluten-free version, quinoa flakes work splendidly. A bit of grated carrot adds extra color and flavor.

Harvest Latkes

Rinku Bhattacharya‘s Harvest Latkes are a crisp and spicy take on traditional potato pancakes. They’re made with potato and rutabaga with a touch of caraway seeds. They’re crispy and delicious.

Chocolate Babka

Traditionally speaking, Babka is a spongy, brioche-like yeast cake made mainly in Eastern Europe. Erin McKenna‘s Chocolate Babka version is not only vegan and gluten-free, but also light and chocolate-y. It’s perfect next to a hot cup of coffee or tea.

Vegan and Gluten-Free Potato Blintzes

These Potato Blintzes by Rhea Parsons are made with gluten-free crepes and filled with caramelized onions folded into mashed potatoes. Fry up the blintzes and enjoy them with vegan sour cream for a delicious and comforting treat.

Vegan Chocolate Hazelnut Rugelach

These vegan Chocolate Hazelnut Rugelach by Rhea Parsons are tender, crunchy, and delicious. And the chocolate hazelnut filling inside is incredible. The rugelach is so pretty and yummy; they would make a perfect gift for friends and neighbors.

Instant Raw Apple Sauce

You have to have apple sauce to dip your latkes in. Instead of buying jars, make your own Raw Apple Sauce. This recipe by Alison Murray is fast, easy and you can flavor it any way you want. This one has a pinch of warm cinnamon. Yum!

Vanilla Glazed Vegan Yeast Doughnuts

You can’t beat the crunch of super sweet vanilla glaze over a warm fried doughnut, fresh from the frying oil. Abby Thompson‘s Vanilla Glazed Vegan Yeast Doughnuts are perfect for celebrating a holiday that’s all about oil and fried noms.

Hanukkah Gelt

Let the kiddos spin the dreidel and enjoy these dairy-free chocolate treats as prizes or gifts.

Fry Fishless Filets

Make it a feast, and while you’re enjoying your spread of traditional Jewish treats, fry up some Gardein fishless filets.

Christmas meal for rescued animals

On a dark and cloudy night, a dog ran into a drum to seek shelter from the rain. Little did she know that the container was used to store tar; she got stuck in the thick black liquid and couldn’t wiggle herself free.

Her cries alerted some construction workers in the vicinity, and they informed our partner Blue Cross of India. The team found the dog curled up and stuck inside the drum. They tried to pry her loose but didn’t succeed, so she was brought to our hospital in Guindy.

She was fed water using a syringe because she was dehydrated and given some food to eat, after which the lengthy process of removing the tar from her body began. She was first covered with plantain leaves and the drum was cut open. Using coconut oil, each of her limbs was freed and she was given a warm bath with medicated shampoo to get the rest off.

Over the next ten days, the same process of oiling and bathing continued, before she was finally ready to be released. When she was dropped off, she seemed thrilled to be back in her surroundings!

Animal rescue from capsized ship - We keep on fighting. The past few days we have been constantly reporting about the ship tragedy in Romania, but the mission is not over yet. Many of you are wondering what is going to happen to the surviving sheep currently receiving medical care on a farm. We are working at full speed to give the sheep a chance to live, so please understand that we can't say more at the moment. Together with other NGOs, our team of ARCA | Letea Wild Horses will attend a demonstration in Romania tomorrow, so that an accident like this can not happen anymore. We'll keep you updated!

As the winter closes in, wildlife rescues across the country are becoming inundated with hedgehogs that are too small to survive hibernation. Luckily, many rescues here in the UK are able to help each other out if the load becomes a bit too much! With several rescue centres close to closing their doors due to patient numbers, we put out a call late last week to see if we could help. Our friends at South Essex Wildlife Rescue soon got in touch and we agreed to admit 40 of their growing intake. These hedgehogs came in all shapes and sizes, but we will care for them over the winter before their release in the spring!

Abby lived out in the desert for over two years. Loreta Frankonyte, JoAnn Wiltz and I headed out to this mobile home park - about 2.5 hours east of Los Angeles.

We were told by the woman who fed her that during this whole time, she wasn't able to ever get close enough to touch Abby.

I am very lucky to have such an amazing team with me, and Abby is really lucky that Hope For Paws was called for this mission.

Extremely matted homeless dog wouldn't let anyone touch her for over two years!!!

Please share this video with your family and friends this holiday. If you would like to adopt Abby, please contact our friends at Smooch Pooch Rescue:

Volunteer with the Animal Rescue Team

One of the most commonly asked questions for our Animal Rescue Team is, “How can I volunteer?” Our team has—and relies on—a strong network of volunteers to help us make a real difference for animals in rescue and disaster relief work. We truly depend on them to help us get this important, lifesaving work done.

One of the most common mistakes prospective volunteers make is waiting until a natural or man-made disaster strikes to begin the application process and to begin proper training and preparation for becoming an Animal Rescue Team volunteer. Unfortunately, by then, it’s too late. If you want to volunteer, it’s important to apply before a disaster. If you get everything done early, you, like our many other volunteers, will be ready to deploy when animals need our help.

I can’t speak enough to the impact people feel from saving animals in need. If you want to make a difference, this is a way to do it. I encourage you to start your application today. With hurricane season on the horizon, our team will be ready to deploy at a moment’s notice - The Humane Society of the United States
