Story of Dogs Sor and Pich

#ProtectMillions Can you imagine what it's like never having had a bath in your whole life? For dogs Sor and Pich, whom we encountered during our mission on Silk Island, that was the reality. They looked more like two balls of (very dirty) fur when we picked them up.   It took us a while to scrub all the dust off but when we were done, we looked into the eyes of two beautiful dogs - and at hundreds of lice and fleas. We continued the treatment and also took care of the severe skin infections both dogs suffered from.   Thanks to your support, Sor and Pich are doing well and enjoy their life on Silk Island. Badger needs help after territorial fight!

When it comes to badgers, the most common cause of admission here at the centre is territorial fighting wounds. In the breeding season, fights between males (and sometimes even females!) can result in large injuries to the rump that need medical attention. Luckily for this badger, it was found cowering in a barn by a dog and was soon collected by a rescuer from a local badger group. Once transferred to the centre, it was up to our vet team to get it back into perfect shape...

Two worried Swans reunited with their lost Cygnets!

No two swan rescues are the same here at WAF, but our most recent venture was not something we'd seen before! Early one morning we were inundated with calls about two swans who had become separated from their cygnets and were going mad with worry. Luckily, Lawrie and Simon were soon on the scene and were able to successfully reunite the family in just a few minutes!

Months of loneliness could have been prevented if people had done the right thing. Luckily, her feeder finally discovered #HopeForPaws and the rest is history! Maru quickly comes to the aid of a robin, admitted to the centre covered in expanding foam! Robins can become extremely stressed in captive situations and can even die as a result, so it was imperative that Maru removed the substance as quickly as possible.

I wasn't able to rescue this older dog by myself... I needed help.

Rescuers race to save Fox trapped in fence

Foxes always seem to get themselves caught in unusual places, and this was no different! Simon and Alannah, one of our volunteers, were called out one weekend to help a fox who had become caught in a gate. Although rescues like this are a common sight here, the team soon found out that the gate was not the only issue they needed to fix...

We truly depend on them to help us get this important, lifesaving work done.

One of the most common mistakes prospective volunteers make is waiting until a natural or man-made disaster strikes to begin the application process and to begin proper training and preparation for becoming an Animal Rescue Team volunteer. Unfortunately, by then, it’s too late. If you want to volunteer, it’s important to apply before a disaster. If you get everything done early, you, like our many other volunteers, will be ready to deploy when animals need our help.

ER Doctor: Pulse Oximeters Detect Oxygen Deprivation Earlier from COVID-19, Help Avoid Ventilators

We speak with Dr. Richard Levitan, an emergency physician based in Littleton, New Hampshire, who volunteered at Bellevue Hospital in Manhattan for 10 days at the height of the COVID-19 surge in April. Based on what he saw, he argues that patients should be going to hospitals sooner and that medical professionals could use a small device you clip on your fingertip, called a pulse oximeter, to help detect the virus earlier by revealing oxygenation problems and elevated heart rates. “A pulse oximeter is just a measure of identifying how well the lungs are working, and, I believe, can be basically an early warning system in terms of patients to know who has COVID pneumonia,” says Dr. Levitan.

Calls Grow for Mass Release from Ohio’s Marion Prison as 80% of Prisoners Test Positive for COVID-19

We get an update on one of the worst coronavirus outbreaks in the United States, at the Marion Correctional Institution in Ohio, where 11 prisoners and one staff member have died, and at least 80% of prisoners and half of the prison staff tested positive. Despite growing calls to release thousands of Ohio’s nearly 50,000 incarcerated people as the coronavirus spreads, Governor Mike DeWine has only approved the release of more than 100 people in the state’s prisons. “We’re seeing a few people being released … but not anywhere near the 20,000 [we are] demanding,” says Azzurra Crispino, whose husband, James, is incarcerated at Marion. She is co-founder of Prison Abolition Prisoner Support.

The mom and dad never had human contact, so Loreta Hernandez and Jessica Holguin got them spayed/neutered, vaccinated, and released. They are fed daily, and they are happy. It is important to understand that there are THREE MILLION feral cats in Los Angeles and it's a real challenge. The best we can do is to try and get as many as possible fixed. Kitten season is almost here, and it's just a nightmare to be born to these conditions and I feel so sad for the ones we never hear about.

April 22 marks the 50th anniversary of Earth Day, when more than 20 million Americans joined in actions to protect the environment — 10% of the U.S. population at the time. Half a century later, in the middle of a pandemic, protests planned around the world have moved online, and the Trump administration has gutted the Environmental Protection Agency — established not long after Earth Day — rolled back fuel economy standards and eased the enforcement of pollution regulations. “The countries that flattened the coronavirus curve early on are doing far better than those like ours, which delayed,” says Bill McKibben, author, educator, environmentalist and co-founder of 350.org. “That’s a pretty perfect analog to the 30 years that we’ve wasted in the climate crisis.”

Why the COVID-19 crisis won't stop grassroots activists in Chile

Just months ago, the streets of Santiago were alive with a vibrant anti-austerity mass protest movement. Now, city streets are largely empty as citizens shelter in place to prevent the spread of COVID-19. But that won't stop those protesters from continuing to organize, according to Chilean climate activist Angela Valenzuela, who says that their concerns still have not been addressed and the COVID-19 crisis has only exacerbated pre-existing problems. "This system of extreme neoliberal policies … is failing to protect people when a crisis like COVID-19 shows up," says Valenzuela. "Another way to fight is to stay home and take care of each other, strengthen our networks through online organizing, and have memories of what has happened in Chile in terms of the environment as well as human rights violations. Fiona Apple's new album "Fetch the Bolt Cutters" was released April 17 and has already become a massive hit, with music site Pitchfork giving the album a rare "perfect 10" review. The album was initially set for release in October, but Apple says she pushed it up on advice of her friend who told her, "People really need music now." Apple says she's glad that her music is connecting with people during the coronavirus pandemic and worldwide lockdowns. But Mark Dimondstein, president of the American Postal Workers Union, says Trump's remarks are part of his agenda to privatize the Postal Service.
