Hero firefighters rescue baby deer from blazing bush fire!
On Saturday, 30th May, we were alerted to the tragic news that Thursley Common had been engulfed in flames. The fire had devastating effects, turning over 150 hectares of land to ash, in just a few hours, decimating all wildlife in its path. This deer fawn had a lucky escape, when it was discovered by the Surrey Fire and Rescue team, who were tackling the blaze. Having been found hiding under a burnt-out tree for safety, this youngster was rushed to the centre for urgent medical attention.
James, Alice, Bân, Clara and Florence are out of quarantine
The five bears from the Healing Hearts and Three Bears rescues are all now settling into their dens and are beginning to take their first steps onto grass.
These are totally new experiences for these bears who have all spent over a decade in single, one level cages with no solid floor and no enrichment. Thanks to supporters like you, they're on the road to rehabilitation. Bear Team Manager Sarah and Bear Team Supervisor Gai give us the latest information on James, Alice, Bân, Clara and Florence from the award winning Vietnam Bear Rescue Centre.

How can we free a trapped pigeon without breaking a priceless chandelier?!
As regular viewers of this channel may know, birds trapped in buildings are both common and very daunting calls... With our longest rescue taking a massive 7 hours, they can be very tricky to do! If that wasn't enough, in this rescue the team had to work around a very large (and hideously expensive) chandelier. Accuracy was definitely needed!

Rescued Circus Lion Feels Grass and Dirt for the First Time in 13 Years!
A baby got stuck in a wall... his mother had to abandon him.
Hello everybody. OK, so the mom had given birth in the attic, and as she was moving the babies to a different location (maybe because of the noise due to construction), Wallter was probably the last one, he looked for his family, and just fell from the attic into the wall. It's sad, but the mother knew there was nothing she can do, so she decided to save her other babies. Luckily, Amy knew to call Hope For Paws for help! Loreta and I have a lot of experience with breaking things and getting into walls, and this time we managed to save WALLter.
Young Crow Entangled and unable to escape!
We're often called out to rescue foxes, hedgehogs and badgers, among various other species, trapped in netting and it seems this juvenile crow had gotten itself into quite a tricky situation! Watch as our veterinary team use a steaming technique, to straighten out its feathers, ready for release back in to the wild.
Baby Kestrel reunited with its family!
We're often called out to return young birds to their nests, after having fallen a fair way to the ground. Luckily unharmed, this young kestrel chick had been doing quite a bit of exploring, whilst it's rescuers waited for us to arrive. With two possible nesting trees quite close together, Lawrie wasted no time in scaling the first, to see if he could find any siblings. However, whilst up the first tree, we get a surprise visit from one of the parents coming to feed in the opposite tree! Hearing the reassuring calls of the other youngsters, it was a sure sign that that was the correct nest.

Baby swan rescue doesn't quite go to plan!
Whilst swan rescues are some of the most common things we do here at Wildlife Aid, they don't always go to plan! Simon was recently called out to check on a young cygnet that appeared to have fishing line in its mouth. Once he had found a boat, it was just a matter of finding the youngster and removing the line, but its parents were not too fond of that idea!
Southeast-Asia feeding programmes
Due to Corona, we had to adapt many of our worldwide campaigns and projects. Furthermore, some new challenges have appeared on which we had to react fast. What kept us especially busy were the many stray animals that were starving, as neither locals nor the missing tourists were able to provide for them anymore. Southeast-Asia was hit especially hard, as the economic impact was worse than in many other parts of the world. Just getting to those animals or even entering the respective countries demanded some creative solutions. After we finally arrived on the ground we saw that we didn't come one second too early, as some of those animals were already starved to the bone. Accordingly, they were very happy to see us and the food we brought with us.
The story of Cotton Blossom's Rescue
The Animals Asia rescue team were ready to save Cotton Blossom back in March but travel restrictions meant that they had to leave her still trapped on the sensitive border area of Vietnam and Cambodia. Last week they were given the go ahead to return and bring her home. It was a 2,200km round trip for the rescue team, but it was all worth it to know Cotton Blossom is now safe and on the road to recovery. Also Cotton Blossom was the last bear to be held captive in Gia Lai province!

Trapped young bird is desperate for water!
Animals stuck in chimneys are a surprisingly common callout here at Wildlife Aid. Corvids, pigeons and even owls have all had to be helped to freedom over the years! In this rescue, Simon was called out to help a young jackdaw that was trapped in a ladies chimney. Having been there for four days, it was in dire need of food and water if it were to survive. Luckily, he had it free in record time, and the bird was only too keen to taste water once more!

Young fox gets completely TANGLED in football netting!
At this time of year (and especially this year), entanglements are a very common call-out here at Wildlife Aid. Whilst we see a broad range of species needing help, young foxes are by far the most common victims we have to set free! In this rescue, Lawrie was called out to help a young fox that had become tangled in a school football net. Having fought to escape, the poor fox was very tangled and needed a short stay in our hospital before it could head back to the wild!
Heavy rains cause China Bear Rescue Centre to declare a flood emergency
Following heavy rain at Animals Asia’s Chengdu sanctuary in China the team at the rescue centre are in action mode to ensure the safety of the rescued animals and sanctuary staff. A dam upstream from the rescue centre has released a torrent of water down the River Pi that the centre is adjacent to, causing the water to rise and come perilously close to buildings on site. Unimpressed mother duck leaves rescuers a rather smelly present!
Among some of our most common rescue calls are female mallards, that have decided to nest in some rather silly places! Whilst we have successfully rescued and released countless duck families, no two are ever the same. In this latest rescue, a mother duck had decided to nest on a balcony, 5 floor up! Watch how Simon skilfully secures the mother, whilst Lawrie jumps in to grab the ducklings...

The brown bear Anya had to spend her entire life behind bars in the Ukraine. Confiscated from a horrible zoo in 2019 she luckily found temporary shelter in another zoo. Now we got the chance to take over Anya and her friend and provide them a new and species-appropriate life in our BEAR SANCTUARY Domazhyr [ Ведмежий Притулок Домажир ]. Will you help us to help them?
Hedgehog WEDGED inside plastic fencing joint!
We're often freeing animals from precarious situations, however, the site of this hedgehog had us stumped. Having never seen a plastic object such as this, we just hoped that with a little gas to relax the hog, we'd be able to slowly wiggle him out, the way he went in! See how Rita gets on...
A call came in on July 18th that two moon bear cubs were in urgent need of our help. The two young cubs were in Yen Bai province around four hours from the Animals Asia Vietnam Bear Rescue Centre in Tam Dao National Park. Our rescue team jumped into action and the bear team at the sanctuary immediately began preparing their new home, the cub house. Animals Asia’s Vietnam Director Tuan Bendixsen said: “It’s highly likely that the two cubs were caught in the wild. Tragically it’s probable that their mother was killed so that her cubs could be taken and traded on the black market. Moon bear mothers would do anything to protect the cubs. In the wild, bear cubs would stay with their mother for up to 2 years or more to learn ‘bear skills’.” These two cubs have cruelly been deprived of not only a mother but also the skills she would have taught them, vital to being able to survive in the wild. It’s up to us now to provide everything they need for a safe and enriched life as they grow and for the rest of their lives. This is, of course, less desirable than the life they were stolen from in the wild, however, it is a better fate than the one they were almost traded into, small barren cages, kept as exotic pets when young and cute, and almost inevitably subject to a lifetime of bile extraction when fully grown.

Volunteer with the Animal Rescue Team
One of the most commonly asked questions for our Animal Rescue Team is, “How can I volunteer?” Our team has—and relies on—a strong network of volunteers to help us make a real difference for animals in rescue and disaster relief work. We truly depend on them to help us get this important, lifesaving work done.
One of the most common mistakes prospective volunteers make is waiting until a natural or man-made disaster strikes to begin the application process and to begin proper training and preparation for becoming an Animal Rescue Team volunteer. Unfortunately, by then, it’s too late. If you want to volunteer, it’s important to apply before a disaster. If you get everything done early, you, like our many other volunteers, will be ready to deploy when animals need our help.
I can’t speak enough to the impact people feel from saving animals in need. If you want to make a difference, this is a way to do it. I encourage you to start your application today.
