Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA)
If you live in Arizona, Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, or New York, one or more of your U.S. senators is critical to avoiding war.
Senators Kelly, Sinema, Coons, Carden, Menendez, and Schumer urgently need to be told to support the United States rejoining the Iran nuclear agreement.
After withdrawing the United States from the Iran nuclear deal, also known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), President Trump waged a failed and reckless “maximum pressure” campaign against Iran. This dangerous policy brought the two countries disturbingly close to the brink of war, shortened Iran’s “breakout time” to build nuclear weapons, and caused Iranian civilians to suffer needlessly. With a new administration in Washington, it’s time for a policy reset and a swift return to diplomacy.
The longer the delay, the more hawks on both sides move away from peace. Iranian elections this year could have disastrous results if the United States has not taken steps away from war.
The Biden administration, its European allies, and Iranian leaders all appear to be eager to turn the page and restore the JCPOA.
But leaders in Washington and Tehran will both face staunch opposition from hardliners, and the window of opportunity to save the deal could be limited. That’s why it’s critical that members of Congress publicly support diplomacy and oppose any legislation that seeks to undermine a return to the deal.
The JCPOA was always meant to be a starting point. While there are a myriad of issues that should be resolved diplomatically between the United States, Iran, and other governments in the region, the nuclear issue is the most pressing. A full return to the nuclear deal should serve as a foundation for future talks to address these issues.
To improve the chances of successful diplomacy between the United States and Iran, members of Congress should:
Publicly support a full return to the JCPOA by the United States.
Oppose any legislation that seeks to hinder the Biden administration from restoring the deal.
Refrain from calls to use maximum pressure sanctions as leverage in attempts to secure additional concessions from Iran on issues outside of the JCPOA.
People For the American Way
Throughout Trump’s presidency, his administration issued a significant number of harmful rules and regulations that will disastrously impact immigration, the environment, LGBTQ protections, endangered species' habitats, workers’ rights, and more.
The good news is that some of them have yet to take effect, and some rules can be blocked from being permanently enacted.
Congress can fast-track reversal of rulemakings from the Trump administration under the Congressional Review Act (CRA).
But there is a catch: as of today, the CRA only applies to Trump rules created since August 2020 and the new Congress has just 60 days to act!
That’s why we must urge them to act immediately!
Under the CRA, agencies are required to submit to Congress notice of a finalized rule. Once notified, Congress has the option of passing a joint resolution of disapproval to overturn the rule. If that passes both chambers of Congress and is signed into law by President Biden, the rule is IMMEDIATELY overturned and has no effect.
Most importantly, a joint resolution of disapproval need only pass by a simple majority in both chambers! With both houses of Congress under Democratic leadership and with a Democratic president, we can make that happen – as long as House and Senate members hear from their constituents how important it is that they vote to block the rules.
Help undo the damage Trump caused in the last few months of his presidency and tell Congress to act!
With the Congressional Review Act, Congress and President Biden have yet one more powerful tool at their disposal to undo the damage that Trump has caused to our country – let’s make sure they act quickly so we don’t lose this opportunity.
— the For the People Act —
But it’s going to take an immense effort because, while we have pro-democracy congressional majorities now, those majorities are as narrow as can be and we’re not guaranteed to keep them after the 2022 midterm elections.
Far-right policymakers from coast to coast are moving to enact voter suppression laws making it harder for voters to register, cast a ballot, and have their ballots counted – well over 100 such bills have already been introduced according to a report by the Brennan Center for Justice, and the number is still growing.[1]
We can STOP most of these attacks on voting by passing the For the People Act – a historic piece of legislation that would help get Big Money out of politics, stop racist and partisan gerrymandering, protect against corruption, and, most importantly, PROTECT THE RIGHT TO VOTE.
Our campaign to pass the For the People Act – H.R. 1/S. 1 – is a massive undertaking, and the next several weeks will make or break whether we’re able to seize this opportunity to restore, rebuild, and reinvigorate our democracy at a time when it’s under constant attack by extremists.
We need to stay on track to pass this legislation and save democracy.
The Far Right knows this legislation the greatest threat to their ability to rig the playing field and hold onto power, despite not being able to win over a majority of voters.
So, while they’re busy trying to erect barriers to the ballot box in the states, the Right is making it their top federal priority to kill the legislation!
We can’t let them. That’s why we’re organizing events every week, mobilizing the grassroots and community leaders in target states and districts, aggressively helping to place op-eds in those same places, running ads, and joining with our partners to generate thousands of phone calls, emails, hand-written letters, and more!
The For the People Act would easily be the most important legislation for strengthening democracy in at least half a century. We fought hard coming into this new Congress for both the House and Senate leadership to make this bill their TOP priority – and they did! The For the People Act was introduced under the bill numbers H.R. 1 in the House and S. 1 in the Senate and we have firm commitments that this sweeping pro-democracy legislation will be central to their policy agenda.
But we still need to get the votes. And that means waging a sustained grassroots and media campaign in target states and districts that needs your immediate support.
Tell Congress to support passage of HR1 — the For the People Act —to clean up our political system, expand and protect voting rights, get big money out of politics, hold elected officials accountable for corruption, and create a democracy that values the voices of all Americans.
Sign our letter. - The For the People Act 1 (HR 1) is a bill that was first passed in the US House of Representatives in 2019 to expand voting rights and create new ethics rules for federal officeholders. Republican Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell made sure that the bill did not “go anywhere in the Senate” on his watch.
Finally, now that Senate Democrats have a slim majority (thank you Georgia and Kamala Harris), the House reintroduced the For the People Act (HR 1) on January 4th. Their first order of business is all about election security provisions and campaign finance reform.
HR1 includes:
Voter verified paper ballot provision mandating the use of paper ballots,
State officials required to preserve paper ballots for recounts or audits,
Voting machines used in federal elections must be manufactured in the U.S.,
Public financing matching small donations at a 6:1 ratio,
Super PACs and other “dark money” organizations must disclose their donors,
Presidential and vice presidential candidates required to publicly disclose their previous ten years of income tax returns, and
To thwart gerrymandering, states required to use independent commissions to draw congressional district lines.
The Federal Election Commission would have five commissioners instead of six to reduce the likelihood of tie votes, and a Blue Ribbon Advisory Panel of non-public office holders.
HR 1 supports a constitutional amendment to overturn Citizens United, in which the Supreme Court held that limits on independent political expenditures by corporations, labor unions, and other associations are unconstitutional.

Tiramisu
This vegan tiramisu is a dairy free and egg free take on the classic Italian dessert! Simple ingredients and a fabulous vegan mascarpone that tastes just like the original!
Whenever I want to make a vegan dessert to impress, my favorite recipes to make are macarons, black forest trifle, and this easy vegan tiramisu.
Growing up, I was the odd kid who’d be drinking coffee while everyone else had hot chocolate or sodas. In my household, coffee was the drink of choice and my parents never had the mentality that coffee was reserved only for adults. From a young age, I acquired a love for the flavor, and this went beyond a simple mug of joe.
Whenever my family would take us out for ice cream, I’d always choose the coffee flavor. Whenever there was a box of mixed chocolate, I’d choose the coffee cream-filled ones. When my birthday rolled around, I’d always choose a coffee or mocha cake. However, nothing came close to my all time favorite coffee dessert- tiramisu.
There is something magical about a tiramisu, and I understand why coffee lovers are obsessed. The combination of espresso, coffee syrup, and coffee liqueur all balanced out with sweet mascarpone and sponge fingers. Since going vegan, it’s been years since I’ve had what they would consider a ‘traditional tiramisu’ but luckily, I gave it a dairy free makeover!
I’ve been meaning to share a vegan tiramisu recipe for quite some time. I was always intimated by the thought of making a mascarpone without any cheese or dairy, but it’s actually ridiculously easy. You only need simple ingredients and the hard part is waiting for the actual dessert to set!
No dairy and no eggs are needed, but you’d never tell. The texture is light, airy, and has alternating smooth and creamy layers. The tiramisu is pleasantly sweet and has a lovely coffee flavor, without being overpowering.
I had some friends over for dinner the other night and served them this for dessert and NO ONE believed me when I said that it was vegan- They thought it HAD to have dairy in it!
INGREDIENTS TO MAKE A VEGAN TIRAMISU
FOR THE CAKE
Pastry flour– Also known as cake flour, this gives the cake a lovely soft and fluffy texture. You can use all purpose flour, but the cake layer will be a little more dense.
Baking powder and baking soda– Both leavening agents are used for some rise and depth.
Salt– Brings out the sweetness of all the other ingredients.
Milk of choice– I used soy milk, but any plant based milk can be used.
Apple cider vinegar– Mixed with the milk to curdle and replace any need for eggs.
Vegan butter– Softened and unsalted. Vegan margarine can also be used.
Sugar– I used white sugar, but unrefined, brown, and coconut sugar all can be used.
Vanilla extract– A must for any good cake.
FOR THE COFFEE SYRUP
Coffee– Freshly brewed coffee or instant espresso. Your coffee must be chilled, or else it will break into the cake layer.
Sugar– Gives the syrup the sticky sweetness.
Kahlua– Optional, but highly recommended.
FOR THE VEGAN MASCARPONE
Cashews– Unsalted and raw. There is no need to soak them beforehand.
Agave nectar– Gives the mascarpone extra sweetness, without being overpowering. Maple syrup can also be used.
Coconut oil– Melted and refined (unrefined has a strong coconut flavor).
Vanilla bean– Optional, but gives it a lovely vanilla flavor.
Milk of choice– I used soy milk, but unsweetened almond or coconut milk also works.
FOR THE VANILLA AND COFFEE CREAM
Milk of choice– This will only be used for the vanilla cream layer.
Coconut oil– Melted. Like the milk, it will only be needed for the vanilla layer.
Kahlua and espresso- Strong coffee AND a coffee liqueur for the coffee cream.
Cocoa powder– To dust between and on top of the layers.
HOW DO YOU MAKE A TIRAMISU?
It’s best to make the tiramisu in sections so that when it comes time to assemble it together, it will be very easy!
Start by preparing the cake layer by mixing the dry ingredients together in a large mixing bowl. Next, whisk together the milk and vinegar, so it has time to curdle. In a separate bowl, whisk together the butter and the sugar until smooth and fluffy. Slowly add in the milk mixture and whisk until it is incorporated. Fold through the dry ingredients and mix well, until combined.
Now, transfer the cake batter onto a lined baking sheet and spread out in a thin, even layer. Bake for 20 minutes, or until a skewer comes out mostly clean. Let the cake cool completely.
While the cake is cooling, prepare the rest of the layers. Whisk together the chilled coffee, sugar, and Kahlua until combined. Set it aside and prepare the mascarpone. In a high-speed blender or food processor, combine all your ingredients and blend until smooth and creamy. Next, divide the batter evenly into two mixing bowls. In the first one, whisk in the milk and melted coconut oil. This will be the vanilla cream. In the next one, add in the Kahlua and espresso, which will form the coffee cream.
Finally, assemble the tiramisu. Lightly grease a deep casserole dish or individual serving glasses. Cut pieces of the sheet cake and dip in the coffee syrup, before placing it into the dish. Top with a layer of vanilla cream, followed by a light dusting of cocoa powder. Place the dish in the freezer for 10 minutes. After 10 minutes, remove from the freezer and add a layer of the coffee cream, and dust with cocoa powder, before placing back into the freezer. Repeat this process until all the cake and cream are used up. Dust with cocoa powder on top, before refrigerating the tiramisu for at least 6 hours, or overnight.
TIPS TO MAKE THE BEST TIRAMISU
Don’t worry too much about the cake layer, as it will eventually be soaked in syrup and cream. If you don’t want to make a sheet cake, you can make a simple vanilla cake instead, and cut it up into squares or thin slices.
If you’d like to make this without alcohol, replace the Kahlua with extra milk. Do not use extra coffee or the flavor will be too intense.
Feel free to use decaffeinated coffee if you cannot tolerate caffeine.
Please do not omit or alter any of the ingredients in the mascarpone layer, or it will likely not come out as intended. If you can’t use cashews, the only other alternative I have tried is Marcona almonds.
STORING AND FREEZING TIRAMISU
To store: Tiramisu should always be stored in the refrigerator, completely covered. It will keep well for at least a week.
To freeze: Place leftover tiramisu into a sealable container and store in the freezer for up to 6 months.
