“Coronavirus Capitalism”: Naomi Klein’s Case for Transformative Change Amid Coronavirus Pandemic

Author, activist and journalist Naomi Klein says the coronavirus crisis, like earlier ones, could be a catalyst to shower aid on the wealthiest interests in society, including those most responsible for our current vulnerabilities, while offering next to nothing to most workers and small businesses. In 2007, Klein wrote “The Shock Doctrine: The Rise of Disaster Capitalism.” Now she argues President Trump’s plan is a pandemic shock doctrine. In a new video for The Intercept, where she is a senior correspondent, Klein argues it’s vital for people to fight for the kind of transformative change that can not only curb the worst effects of the current crisis but also set society on a more just path.

Keeanga-Yamahtta Taylor: COVID-19 shows "we are as safe as the least insured person"

Democratic primary rivals former Vice President Joe Biden and Senator Bernie Sanders took to the debate stage Sunday to an empty audience in their first one-on-one face-off amid escalating tensions over the COVID-19 pandemic.

The two clashed on their solution to the COVID-19 crisis, Medicare for All, the climate emergency, Joe Biden’s voting record and whether or not the U.S. needs a political revolution. Keeanga-Yamahtta Taylor says that more than anything, COVID-19 provides a clear argument for the necessity of Medicare For All, and makes a strong case for a Bernie Sanders presidency.

"What Sanders said over the weekend, that we are as safe as the least insured person, has never made more sense than it does in this moment," she says. "We have to ask as a society, are we going to use this opportunity or use this moment to actually implement fundamental change, or are we going to continue to kick the can down the road and act as if there is some normal to get back to?"

Tips on hand-washing don't "lift the anxiety" for prisoners across the U.S. worried about COVID-19

Visits to federal prisons and most state prisons in the U.S. have been shut down in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic, which poses a growing threat to the 2.3 million people locked up in prisons and jails across the country.

In the San Francisco Bay Area, where the local government has implemented one of the most severe responses in the U.S. to halt the spread of COVID-19, the San Quentin State Prison has put two prison blocks under partial quarantine.

Juan Moreno Haines, an award-winning journalist who has been imprisoned in San Quentin since 2006, says the prison has also posted signs about proper hand-washing technique and information about how the disease is spread.

"But that doesn't lift the anxiety level," Haines says. "My personal opinion is that it's not a matter of if it's going to happen, it's when it's going to happen."

How Republicans are packing federal courts with conservative extremists

Amid headlines flooded with COVID-19 updates, The New York Times released a report detailing how Republican Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has been personally asking veteran conservative judges to retire so that President Trump can fill the vacancies before the next election.

"Two-thirds of the appellate judges that have been confirmed in the Trump administration are white men — many of them carrying very extreme views against gay marriage, trying to undermine voting protections and voting rights in this country," says Vanita Gupta, president and CEO of the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights and former head of the Civil Rights Division at the Department of Justice during the Obama years.

"They're very young. These people will serve in these positions for a lifetime. Even as we are grappling with the enormous democracy burdens that the pandemic is causing us, let's not lose sight of what's happening to our federal courts."

The Fashion Industry Doesn’t Want You to Know These Facts About Cashmere

Do you know the effects cashmere has on the environment? It's estimated that 70% of Mongolia’s grasslands have degraded largely because of the demand for it. Desertification like this can cause dust storms reaching all the way to the U.S.

Anyone who has ever felt or even thought of the pain of losing a loved one knows that there is nothing quite as excruciating. Every pet owner's nightmare is waking up and finding that his/her beloved one has been taken. Across Southeast Asia, this is a reality for millions of dogs and cats that get stolen and killed for the dog and cat meat trade. Please support our campaign against this horrible crime http://bit.ly/DogAndCatMeat

Blind kitten sits in a parking lot and wonders how will she survive in this world.

Luckily for Kenshi, Hope For Paws got a call about her, and things turned around quickly once JoAnn Wiltz and Katie McKittrick arrived.

I really hope this will help convince you to join us with a small donation: https://www.HopeForPaws.org Two days after the rescue, the mom, dad and the two siblings were captured too. The mom and dad never had human contact, so Loreta Hernandez and Jessica Holguin got them spayed/neutered, vaccinated, and released. They are fed daily, and they are happy. It is important to understand that there are THREE MILLION feral cats in Los Angeles and it's a real challenge. The best we can do is to try and get as many as possible fixed. Kitten season is almost here, and it's just a nightmare to be born to these conditions and I feel so sad for the ones we never hear about.

If you would like to see a longer version that includes the surgical procedure, you can see it here: https://rumble.com/user/HopeForPaws - it's not for everybody...the surgery shows the removal of the eyes, but it really brings you closer to the things they have to deal with.

The SAN Rescue Network, Wildlife Aid TV, Official PETA TV, Flying Fur Animal Rescue, Animals Asia, ASPCA, Hope For PAWS, Beagle Freedom Project...
Last week, Nashville, Tennessee was hit with terrifying, deadly tornadoes. It was devastating for all who live there and love the city.

People were killed and many are hurt. Animals were also affected. Country stars were deeply concerned for the people of their cultural hub, and Miranda Lambert is concerned about not just people, but the animals. She’s been working on helping animals displaced by the tornadoes.

Lambert visited Metro Animal Care and Control in Nashville over the weekend to visit the animals and see what she can do to help. She shared the following video encouraging people to donate.

She encouraged people to donate money or supplies and volunteer at their local shelters. According to iHeartRadio, “She promised to match all monetary donations made to her MuttNation Foundation up to $37,500 with the goal of raising a total of $75,000,” and “In less than 24 hours, $11,000 was raised for shelters. As of Monday (March 9), $29,000 has been raised towards the $37,500 goal.”

Lambert also reminded those who cannot find their pets, that it’s likely they will be found at their local shelter, especially when the sounds and winds calm down and animals come out of hiding.

We are truly happy to report that Karma, who was rescued in January, has befriended Kalpana and Holly.

Since they met a few days ago the trio has been joined at the hip.

The three of them have gone swimming in a pool and have taken strolls together. But mostly, they enjoy embracing one another with their trunks.

Because Karma is blind, her world was both lonely and dark before she was rescued.

Now her loneliness is gone and she has a family of her own.

Thank you for making her rescue possible!

Someone kicked a Golden Retriever so hard until he almost died.

Right after rescuing Masik from this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jCstF... (1.8 million views). We received another call on the Hope For Paws emergency line. A Golden Retriever was laying down for many hours, unresponsive, and Loreta Frankonyte and I knew it was an emergency. Of course, there was no way for us to know how badly he was injured (nothing was visible), but we could tell that something was wrong internally.

After the rescue, we named him Antonio, and rushed to see Dr. Pedraza. He told us that looking at the ultrasound images, it looks like he was kicked really hard. He didn't believe that the dog was hit by a car because there were no signs of that - no road rash, no broken bones, no visible trauma that is always present in cases where dogs are hit by cars... it was a hit that injured his liver and spleen.

Because of the injury, Antonio was bleeding internally, and the doctor told us that if we didn't get to him that day, he would have bled internally and would have died within hours. After the surgery, he continued to our friends at The Little Red Dog: http://www.TheLittleRedDog.org and the rest of this story is in this video

When you donate to Hope For Paws, you are enabling us to spend more time rescuing and less time fundraising for these surgeries.

If you can, please join us today and become a Hope For Paws member - even a $5 monthly donation would be an amazing help: https://www.HopeForPaws.org

You can follow Antonio (Toni) on Instagram here: https://www.instagram.com/toni_pepper...

Grounded BUZZARD nursed back to health!

Common buzzards (also called hawks in the USA) are quite common patients here at the centre. This one arrived with us after being found on the ground with a nasty injury below its left eye. Luckily, Maru was on the case and soon had the bird feeling good as new! Apologies for the filming in this video... Simon had the camera!

Orphaned Baby Foxes meet their human carers!

This time of year is known as 'orphan season' here at Wildlife Aid. From now until the Autumn, orphaned and injured animals start flooding into the centre and every pen at the centre will be full! This year, our first new arrival was a very cute fox cub, who arrived at the centre after being abandoned by his mother. Here is his story...

New Van Will Help Us Save Countless Animals!

Simply surviving on the busy streets is an everyday struggle for homeless cats and dogs, but at In Defense of Animals India, we're doing everything we can to help them, and to change attitudes about them. Volunteer with the Animal Rescue Team

One of the most commonly asked questions for our Animal Rescue Team is, “How can I volunteer?” Our team has—and relies on—a strong network of volunteers to help us make a real difference for animals in rescue and disaster relief work. We truly depend on them to help us get this important, lifesaving work done.

One of the most common mistakes prospective volunteers make is waiting until a natural or man-made disaster strikes to begin the application process and to begin proper training and preparation for becoming an Animal Rescue Team volunteer. Unfortunately, by then, it’s too late. If you want to volunteer, it’s important to apply before a disaster. If you get everything done early, you, like our many other volunteers, will be ready to deploy when animals need our help.

I can’t speak enough to the impact people feel from saving animals in need. If you want to make a difference, this is a way to do it. I encourage you to start your application today. With hurricane season on the horizon, our team will be ready to deploy at a moment’s notice - The Humane Society of the United States

The New Poll Tax? Long Lines, Closed Polling Stations Hurt Black, Latinx & Student Voters in TX, CA

Long wait times plagued polling places in Texas throughout Super Tuesday, especially in districts with high numbers of black and Latinx voters and college students.

Many voters reported waiting in line for more than three hours to cast a ballot. At least 750 Texas polling sites have been shuttered since 2013, when the Supreme Court slashed federal oversight of Texas and other Southern states under the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

There were long lines, too, in Los Angeles, where many polling places reported problems with a brand-new $300 million voting system.

The Sanders campaign sued to keep polling places open an extra two hours, saying voters were denied their constitutional right.

The county registrar denied that request.

For more, we speak with Ari Berman, senior writer at Mother Jones magazine and author of “Give Us the Ballot: The Modern Struggle for Voting Rights in America.”

Raymond

On Wednesday last week, our vet team at the Vietnam Bear Rescue Centre made the difficult decision to end the suffering of our beloved bear friend Raymond. Raymond had been living at the Vietnam Bear Rescue Centre since he was rescued on 15 September 2011 from a bile farm in Nam Dinh province, south of Hanoi along with two other bears, Yulgilbar and Caz.

Heidi Quine, Bear & Vet Team Director at the Vietnam Bear Rescue Centre said: “I am thankful that we were able to give Raymond the dignity of a peaceful death while he continued to experience some joy in his life.

I am thankful that his last hours were spent as a happy bear, with his coconut and an indulgent number of treats. Most of all, I am thankful that because of you, we were able to give him just shy of eight and a half years of bliss.”

Amid the Warren-Sanders beef, have progressives missed their opportunity?

"The progressive movement missed a big opportunity to unite behind both Warren and Sanders in a front that would have pushed a progressive nominee into the convention," says Black Lives Matter co-founder Alicia Garza, after Tuesday night's round of Democratic primary voting saw Joe Biden pull ahead with a decisive victory in Michigan.

Garza supported Warren, but says that despite progressive infighting, both campaigns possess complementary strengths necessary to build a strong coalition. Intercept journalist Naomi Klein agrees, and reflects on Warren's decision not to endorse anyone after dropping out of the race last week.

"I agree with all of the people saying she does not owe anything to Bernie Sanders," says Klein. "I do believe as an elected politician who ran on a platform of Medicare for All, of a Green New Deal, of standing up for migrant rights, and standing up against racism, and standing up for women's rights — that she owes it to those issues."

Nurses on the Frontlines of Coronavirus Pandemic Demand More Protection & Medicare for All

The number of coronavirus cases in the United States has passed 1,000 Tuesday, with the rate of infections likely increasing.

Despite this, the U.S. continues to lag on testing, and healthcare workers say they lack adequate protection and protocols to allow them to safely care for infected patients.

They also say the country’s hospitals are woefully unprepared to handle the crisis. Nurses in the hot zones of California and Washington had already reported having to beg for face masks and lacking guidance on how to address the virus.

We are joined by Jean Ross, president of National Nurses United, the largest organization of registered nurses in the United States, which says Centers for Disease Control actually weakened its guidelines on responding to the pandemic by rolling back requirements for protective gear, not requiring infected patients to be in negative pressure isolation rooms at all times, and decreasing healthcare worker protections. In response, nurses with the NNU are holding a national day of action today to demand better protections for healthcare workers and the public.

We are also joined by Alicia Garza with the National Domestic Workers Alliance and Black Futures Lab, a co-founder of the Black Lives Matter Global Network, and Naomi Klein, senior correspondent at The Intercept and the inaugural Gloria Steinem chair of media, culture and feminist studies at Rutgers University.
