Follow our Northwest Representative Robb Krehbiel as he works in the community to build and fund orca rain gardens in Tacoma, Washington.

You're part of a wildlife dream team. And I just wanted to express my appreciation for your support.

Also, I’d love to introduce you to one of your fellow wildlife lovers. Robb Krehbiel is our Northwest Representative, based in rainy Seattle.

Robb lives in orca country. And all that rain Seattle gets washes all manner of city pollution into Puget Sound. That’s a big reason why orcas and other ocean wildlife in the region are hurting.

Please enjoy this video. We made it for you and other members of our wildlife community. And don’t forget, none of this can happen without your continuing support!

Endangered Blue Whales

Take Action: West Coast Orcas to Be Hurt by Navy War Games

The U.S. Navy is planning massive training exercises in the Pacific that could injure thousands of marine mammals. These activities include sonar, explosives, air combat and torpedo testing along the coasts of California, Oregon and Washington.

West Coast orcas are already in crisis and can't afford more stress. Sonar and other noise from these war games can deafen and kill whales. They also interfere with communication and feeding.

This has led NOAA officials to declare this startling number of deaths an Unusual Mortality Event, or UME.

You might be asking yourself: "What does a UME declaration mean?"

This means that NOAA can rally the troops, so to speak, to find out more about these gray whale deaths. The Marine Mammal Center is a key partner for this investigation.

But you see, none of this vital work is possible without your help. Once we figure out why so many gray whales are dying, we’ll be able to inform concerned people like you how you can help.

The time has finally come! After working hard on refitting the newly purchased vessel "The Modoc", the hull is cleaned, the engines are running and the bridge is ready for action. A big shout out to all the great volunteers, that helped making this happen.

For the first voyage the Modoc is heading down the West Coast to Ensenada Mexico, where the final touch-ups are being taken care of, before setting sails to Central America and across the Pacific.

After months of relentless hard work the Modoc is getting ready. Over the past 6 month the crew has grown to 13 dedicated volunteers that will get the boat ready for future missions to Central America and across the Pacific.

On the first part of the voyage, the Modoc will be cruising through the beautiful Puget Sound - home to the Orcas. While refueling and restocking on essentials, the crew will stop over in Port Townsend till every last bit is ready and fastened for the open waters.

Once in open waters Ensenada, Mexico is the next port of call. There will be 2 more planned stop-overs in Los Angeles and San Diego, where the much longed-for Schiebel S100 drone will join the Modoc.

This will be put to great use in fields of fishery patrols, in particular  for locating illegal fishing vessels and recording positions and times of law infringements across the pacific.

This is your chance to get involved in something awesome. Since we're refitting and running an entire ship now, there's a great chance we can get you on the team.  You are a keen worker and want to make an impact? Don't be shy.  Click on the links above, or send me an email.

Canada passes 'Free Willy' bill banning whale and dolphin captivity

Canada's House of Commons passed a bill Monday to make it illegal to hold a whale, dolphin or porpoise captive, punishable by fines up to $150,000 USD.

It's known colloquially as the "Free Willy" bill, named after the 1993 movie in which a young boy frees a killer whale from a US amusement park."Nothing fantastic ever happens in a hurry. But today we celebrate that we have ended the captivity and breeding of whales and dolphins. This is news to splash a fin at," animal rights group Humane Canada said in a tweet

The bill is expected to become law. It was introduced in the Senate in December 2015 and was already approved there but must return now and gain "royal assent."

Frustrated by the increase in family homelessness she saw across Washington DC, Kelly Sweeney McShane and her organization Community of Hope decided to try something different. The Green Party of Canada celebrated in a statement Monday.

"These intelligent, social mammals will now get to live where they belong -- in the ocean," the party said.Dozens of supporters of the bill used the hashtag #emptythetanks to celebrate on social media.

The bill makes exceptions if the animals are rescues, in rehabilitation or licensed for scientific research, or when it's in the animal's best interests."A person may move a live cetacean from its immediate vicinity when the cetacean is injured or in distress and is in need of assistance," the bill states.

As Americans head to the beaches this summer, it’s easier than ever to feel grateful for our beautiful oceans and coastline. But President Trump is trying to expand dirty and dangerous offshore drilling, and that could change the face of America’s beaches forever.

Make no mistake, opening the floodgates to dirty and dangerous offshore drilling is a catastrophe waiting to happen for ocean wildlife, coastal communities and our oceans. It simply isn’t worth the risk.

Right now, your member of Congress has the power to block President Trump’s shortsighted plan – and needs to hear from YOU before this important vote.

President Trump’s offshore drilling plan would open more than 90 percent of our oceans to offshore drilling, and it’s time for Congress to ensure this does not happen. We desperately need 30,000 Wavemakers like YOU to contact your lawmakers and say with one united voice: Protect our coast from new dirty and dangerous offshore drilling!

I emailed you today because your Representative is preparing to vote on H.R. 3052, the Interior-Environment funding bill, and this is a huge opportunity. Proposed amendments to this bill could block expanded offshore drilling and Atlantic seismic airgun blasting! We can’t let this opportunity slip by.

If there was ever a time to make your voice heard, it’s now. President Trump’s radical offshore drilling plan is a clear example of special interest politics over people, which is why it is vital we continue to fight back and keep the pressure on lawmakers.

Opposition to dirty and dangerous offshore oil is widespread and bipartisan. Over 2,200 elected officials from the local, state and federal level – Republicans and Democrats – have opposed or expressed concern with expanded offshore drilling and exploration, as well as:

  • Every East and West Coast governor

  • More than 360 local municipalities

  • Alliances representing over 46,000 businesses and over 500,000 fishing families

It’s on us to make sure our elected leaders protect our coast by ensuring no new drilling and spilling poisons along our shores – not now, not ever.

Scotland’s Argyll Coast and Islands have been declared a Hope Spot – the first in mainland United Kingdom – to shed light on the immense beauty, rich history and vibrant life along the country’s west coast and to recognize the four community networks (CAOLAS, CROMACH, Friends of the Sound of Jura and Save Seil Sound) that have banded together under the Coastal Communities Network, Scotland, to raise community awareness of the need to encourage protection of Scotland’s unique marine ecosystems. When a shelter employee heard a faint whimper outside a local shelter, she found Dudley tied to a fence and stuffed in a box in the dead of winter. This freezing puppy’s collar was so tight that it had to be cut off so he could breathe normally. Once he was taken into Jurassic Bark Rescue, all of the hardships he had endured became clear:

  • Demodex Mange

  • Bronchial Pneumonia

  • Malnourishment

  • Bacterial infections

  • Heartworms

  • & a bone deformity that made every step incredibly painful

Jurassic Bark was able to treat Dudley for most of these conditions, but they could not afford the surgery needed to correct his painful bone deformity.

Unfortunately, Dudley’s heartbreaking story is not uncommon.

In the Croatian city of Dubrovnik, 300 dogs are still waiting for a municipal shelter, two years after Mato Franković, the new mayor, promised they would have one in less than 12 months.

The dogs live at the private Žarkovica Animal Shelter, on a mountainside just outside the beautiful medieval city where Game of Thrones was filmed. At Žarkovica, Sandra Sambrailo is taking care of the dogs until the new shelter is built. The problem is that Žarkovica is technically illegal. It lies on a UNESCO heritage site and the mayor is not allowed to supply it with electricity, water or proper buildings. The law forbids it and he would be fired if he helped.

No water, poor shelter, these dogs need our help!

This means that every day Sandra and workers climb the steep mountain carrying food and water for 300 hungry dogs.

New dogs arrive sick, wounded and hungry.

This is where Network for Animals comes in…We help Žarkovica in every way we can. We pay for a worker to help Sandra; we help pay for spay and neuter programs and emergency medical care for the dogs. And we’ve been doing this for three years.

We can’t stop until the new shelter is built, and so we earnestly plead with you to donate generously to Network for Animals today.

Without us, the dogs of Žarkovica would have very little hope. Sandra is hanging on by a thread, she’s getting older, the weather is getting harsher, and the dogs ever more needy. Please help us today so we can continue to provide urgently-needed help.

There is some good news – Mayor Franković has found land to build the shelter and has commissioned architects to design it. He’s handed the project to Network for Animals, so our experts can make sure it meets the goal of making it one of the best shelters in Europe.

We’re working really hard, with the goal of helping the mayor start building within a few months. This is part of the crusade to help dogs around the world.

We will help the mayor, we will help Žarkovica – all because we will do whatever it takes to help animals.
